View Full Version : Any digital delays that truly sound and feel like analog?

I’m looking for the same sound and "experience" as the Deluxe Memory Man but with longer delays (1 Sec or more) and quieter repeats (white noise in the DMM repeats, esp when they are at max length). This probably means digital, right? There is a large crop of new digi delays, but do any truly sound/feel/operate like analog? I also want modulation on the repeats, so looking for a delay with it’s own modulation or one with the option of separate wet and dry outs so I can put a mod pedal after the wet out and then recombine with the dry out using an A/B/Y pedal.
Suggestions/thoughts? Maybe this is not possible, and I will need to decide between analog sound and digital flexibility/features/delay length (or one of each?! which obviously gets expensive and clutters up the board).

Haven't tried one myself but it sounds like you are looking for a Jacques Prisoner

The Prisoner is analog, mono, and has ~300 ms. Great pedal, but I doubt it's what he wants

Dr. Scientist's Sunny Day Delay does a great job. It also has an optional chorus on the repeats like the DMM. It is digital but still retains the warm organic feel of the DMM. I'm actually considering one myself and I love my DMM.

And its only $215

My favorite is the T-Rex Replica....incredibly warm, but no modulation. I stick some light modulation before it, though, and the pedal is so warm that you don't really miss mod. IMHO :)

I've heard great things about the Freakshow FX Digilog.

I just got my Digilog a week ago and it is amazing.
Sounds so warm and has great delay times.
Also, the oscilation button is great.

Quicksilver is hard to come by, expensive, and some say it's noisy. The Digilog is also apparently noisy at longer delay setting (only goes to 600 mSec anyway) and so works better up to only 300 mSec. At least this is my understanding from research here!

The Chandler delay. Best digital delay I ever heard.

The T-Rex Replica is the ONLY digital delay that sounds like analog to my ears. I am seriously looking at one right now...

The Ibanez DE7 is inexpensive and sounds great to me in "tape echo" mode with the repeats sounding warm and diffused -very tape-like. Maybe I'm easily satisfied but I dont need to look futher for delay. Bobhttp://i9.tinypic.com/5z3vfnl.jpg

Another Ibanez DE-7 vote here. Real, real close to what your looking for. To me, at least, the "tape tone" is as good as it can get for digital. Cheap, cheap, cheap as well.

You Sir need the new digital memory man. Looks cool but I don't know when it'll be available.

The DE7 will give you longer delays that sound nicely analog-like.
But, what would be cool is a DE7 with a tone knob and modulation. I guess that would be the DD20.
Let's see how the TC Nova sounds - it has longer delays (up to 2290 ms), a color (tone) knob, three styles of modulation, variable modualtion levels, and you apply the color and modulation parameters to all six of the delay types.
It all depends on the sound and how it hits you.

Noisy? I have one and haven't noticed. I am having an issue with it going "radio" when there is a pop in the electrical or seemingly on its own at times. I've called Loren so we'll find out. Other that that, I like it very much. The repeats are quite warm, though not as much so as my AD202 (go figure).

Don't agree. It's got noise above 300 ms, but not a ton of noise.

I have a Digilog also and I just finished playing with it to see if there is this "white noise" people are talking about and I have never heard anything but delay.

The Replica's a great sounding delay but i gotta be honest...i've been totally blown away with a crappy ol' DD-2 as of late. So far i've had 3 Replia's (don't ask), Memory Lane, Deep Blue Delay, TC Vintage, BYOC etc etc... long list. Anyways...i bought this DD-2 from Lou V to basically run my Pete Cornish TES which i've ordered and to be honest i'm happy as hell with it. No tap tempo blah blah blah, just a nice warm organic delay. Seriously...for the money they go for on Ebay, it's a bargain.

The Quicksilver is not noisey. Not at all.
They are expensive though, but very worth it. The best delay I've ever played or owned. It owns the Replica hands down.
The Blackbox Oxygen Compressor is noisey but not the Blackbox Quicksilver

DD-2 - good enough for Cornish to base the TES on.
My prefer is the Chandler echo, but if you have not the opportunity to find one, looks for an Ibanez DL-10. Small, cheap, fabulous tone.

I played thru my friend's AKAI Headrush E-1 and was impressed by how fat and juicy it sounded for a digital delay. It has a great tape echo sound plus looping which I don't bother with. Think they're E-2 now and under 200 clams.

I just bought the new Boss Space Echo RE-20 and I'm really enjoying it. It took me awhile to get the hang of it but now
I'm real happy with it.

I have the E2, and a DD20, and I have to say that the sound quality of the Headrush is outstanding- substantially warmer, clearer, and overall more pleasing to the ear than the DD20. It also has a significantly better bypassed tone. Still, I end up using the DD20 more often because of the different modes, BPM readout, and true stereo-outs.
But as far as a great digital delay with long delay time, tap, and warm analog tone/feel, the E2 is killer.

The Diamond Pedals Memory Lane probably covers all your requirements. It's analog though. I bought one of these hoping to replace the Hughes & Kettner Replex (digital) on my board. The Replex doesn't have tap tempo and takes up a lot of real estate on the pedal board.
Ultimately the Replex stayed and the Memory Lane went. The Replex is really hard to beat tonewise. The Memory Lane was just too sensitive and fiddly for me. I really didn't care for the modulation that much either.

Agreed FleaRadical - the Replex is amazing - just so BIG...

Don't laugh, but these little fellers sound great... and they cost under £25! Really...

Since I got mine I've used nothing else. If you don't believe me, go on eBay and buy one... they're cheap enoughb to take a chance on.

Just got a used Replex yesterday. I love analog delay, have tried to get along with digital delay before. This is the first one that's really doing it for me. Yes, it is huge. It also has a beautiful sound.

The Keeley DD-3 mod will get close on many of your ideas.
If you could get a DD-3 with the big chip MIJ unit and get the mod you could have a great delay. You can insert any effect(s) you want in the repeat loop the 3 way switch can take you from very long delays to the analog feel.
