I just picked up an amazing sounding '68 bassman which I have not yet confirmed but may have been modded by one of our favorite amp builders form California.., Has a Gain mod to the bass channel and an overall amazing Voxy stringy chime and amazing compresion. Questions I have for other bassman owners are: How will KT 66's fare in a bassman instead of 6l6's and is there an 8 ohm tap on the bassman transformer?

They won't fit in the stock cabinet. (too tall)
is there an 8 ohm tap on the bassman transformer?
No.

I've seen a Bassman head where a hole was cut in the bottom of the cabinet directly under the power tubes, and then the hole was covered on the bottom exterior of the cabinet with a flat metal plate...I'm guessing that the hole was cut for extra clearence (for larger tubes?)
On a Bassman head that I have, I measured about 4-1/4" space between the bottom of the tube socket to the inside surface of the cabinet...I guess with a hole cut and blocked-off from the outside there would be a total of about 5".
Hear is another idea ,and Do double check me on this;
I believe that I've read that the plate impedence of a KT-66 tube is similar to that of a 6V6 tube, which leads me to wonder if , KT-66 tubes mated to a stock Bassman output transformer, should be better suited to an 8 ohm load.
It seems like these days, even the "low-keyed and humble" Bassman head is being considered a vintage piece, and therefore you may not want to cut it up, but I believe that it can be done.
