Hey guys,
I have a 78 Gibson Ripper that I love. What I don't love is how low output the pickups are. I'm thinking about replacing them. I checked into some Rio Grandes, but I think they are a little out of my price range. I'm thinking about maybe getting some Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders.
Anyone have opinions or insight? Will they even fit?

the "thing" about quarter pounders is that they're pretty high output themselves.
not to mention, The Ripper is a beautiful thing in its natural state.

Yeah, that's why I was looking into them. I want higher output pickups. I don't know what it is, but my ripper is a little on the quiet side.
I love the fact that is all original right now, but it's my bass and I would like it to do what I want. Maybe I should just buy an OLP Musicman knock off and leave my Ripper alone.

+1. I'd hesitate to **** with that Ripper mojo.

i apologize. for some reason I thought you said they were too high output. no idea where i got that. sorry.
I understand not wanting to mess with your bass - but a pickup swap is a reversable process.
You could also try using an outboard preamp (Aguilar, Sadowsky, and Fodera all make nice models) to help juice your signal.
Cheers,

I saw that as a possibilty. Do you know how much that usually runs?
Why do you think they need to be rewound? They're fairly tame sounding, fairly low output pickups. Nothing wrong with that, I like the sound, but it's just the way they are.
You could have the originals overwound, but that would change the sound and hurt the value. And I don't know what Rio Grandes or Duncan QPs you're talking about, but none of either company's standard pickups would fit without having to mod your bass.
Duncan's Custom Shop has Ripper replacements for $160 each. Expensive, but if you're that dissatisfied with the tone you could have them wound to your specs and keep the originals, so you won't devalue your bass.

It entirely depends upon what you want done. Try Lindy Fralin (http://www.fralinpickups.com/rewind_repair.asp)-
