I've been spinning Band if Gypsys over and over today at work and
DAMN.

It really grabbed me today, but Billy Cox SO defines the pocket on this. He's just so killer. Never hear of him much (being in Jimi's band will do that) but damn that's some serious groove.

What did he do after Jimi, and is he still playing?

He's still playing at times. He did this thing that I was fortunate to get involved with several years ago. He was playing bass for Scott Henderson (Buddy Guy's guitarist I think), along side with Noel Redding on drums and Reese Wynans on keys. Got the privilege to meet Eddie Kramer at the rehearsals. Other than that, I think he's involved with his church and had a second hand store of some sort.

Super nice guy, it didn't matter to him what he was playing or playing through. In fact, everyone was super.

Nine To The Universe is another great album that showcases his playing. Its a collection of studio recordings from the same era 69-70. Solid and deliberate playing.

I think he runs a pawn shop here in Nashville. I recorded a CD in 2003 with Buddy Miles doing a couple of cuts for me. I wish I could have gotten in touch with Billy...... Man, if i could have pulled that off

Before I played guitar, I started on bass and I wore the BOG album out.
Billy had a MySpace page but I don't see it around anymore.
He was def in the pocket. Billy and Buddy defined solid.

I saw Billy in the 80's 2X with a pickup band, on some NY Steamboat cruise.

Check out The Band Of Gypsys Returns with Billy and Andy Aledort.
Alot of the Jimi DVD's released by the Estate, Woodstock, BOG, Isle Of Wight, feature interviews and commentary by Billy.

He's one of my heros for sure.

Noel Redding on drums......

that would have been interesting to see...and HEAR. Do you mean Mitch Mitchell?

BOG is one of my favorite albums of all time. Jimi and Billy in synch and GREAT basslines!

BOG is still a slamming record. Disc. Er, bunch of tunes. Really dug what Billy did on that live recording. Billy also played on the Cry of Love album (IIRC), which is supposed to be out of print. Rumor has it that album was remixed and released as First Rays of the New Risen Sun. I need to pick that up!

I have 'Cry Of Love' it's an album of Jimi's unreleased stuff postmortem. Actually not very good outside of 'Angel' and a few others...IMHO.

Yup, the whole album is a classic. I just spun off a cassette of The Cry Of Love (from the album) to cd and was blasting it in the car!!

I got all the cds but IMO it sounded better on vinyl.

yea...'My Friend, Sraight Ahead, Astro Man, Belly Button Window are weak and 'In From The Storm' is a garage band jam. :munch....the rest are CLASSICS...especially 'Angel' and 'Drifting' which are masterpieces IMHO.
