What do you guys think the modern rock guys are using? And why do you think so? EL-34's 6l6gc or solid state.

depends how modern... i think shredders stick with el34s because they are more articulate, but those kids who wear black nail polish are more into the 6l6 thing because they generally offer a more scooped out midrange that so many metalheads love.

Well, seeing as alot of them are using Marshalls, EL34, but I think EL84 is more likely.

When you say 'modern rock' I'm assuming you mean 'classic rock not' and newer? If it's tubes, the modern sounds I'm aware of are often from amps based on the Soldano SLO-100. The concept is that you have a lot of pre-amp distortion control set on top of a clean and loud power amp with 6L6's. MB Rectifier amps, anything from Peavey with a Van Halen related number stuck on the front...dunno about Diezel, Engl, and Bogner. If it's a Marshall, it's probably EL-34s.

I'm 30 and I try to stay in touch with what the 'kids' are doing these days but I'm an old school rocker by trade and heart.

The detuned thing is way out of style in many circles. A lot of 16-25 year olds are into vintage rock sounds; at least the ones I talk to and see playing. I'm having trouble pinpointing an answer here because you have such a wide variety of music that is popular these days. Bands that I think of as new like say system of a down are really probably 'old school' or well established in the minds of many people. FWIW I believe the guy from system of a down plays marshall plexi's and /13 amps.

I personally prefer 6L6's but I play a lot of classic rock, jam rock, and blues stuff.

FWIW - My two favorite guitarist use SLO's and neither uses a lot of preamp gain:

Hmmmmm, I'm a modern rock guy and I am using 6V6 power tubes mostly, with a lot of EL84 mixed in there too. No EL34s or 6L6s at the very moment. Why? Because I love the amps I use, A LOT, and they happen to sport the tubes I listed. I am not following anyone's trend, nor do I care to sound like someone else except by coincidence. Nothing against EL34s or 6L6s, there are gazillions of great amps built around these tubes, and I've owned my share of them, of all kinds. And the same thing goes for solid state amps.

BTW, who are the "modern rock guys" to whom you refer? You mean like, famous? Or good? Or both?? I'm not famous, but my music, written and recorded by me and me alone, gets national airplay on a regular basis. Do I count???:BEER

I woulda voted, but there wasn't a None-of-the-Above option.

Have an all-valve weekend.

I don't know who the guy is in the top picture. When EC was using them, everyone hated his tone. I saw him on the Journeyman tour and he was running the clean channel cranked. Fwiw, when ABB came back from wherever they'd been, I saw them on tv a couple of times and didn't like Haynes' or Betts' tone. Could have been the tv studio process killing the sound. Dunno.

The guy in the top pic is the reason I play guitar. I have yet to hear a more uniquely good player.

Michael Houser of Widespread Panic

for those bands I'd say EL34's. Stone Sour uses Uber and Rivera which both use EL34's i think? Breaking Ben uses H&K = EL 34's. not sure about Fuel.

It's a silly question. They use whatever tubes their favorite amp uses.
