How many of you use them? Do you use them exclusively? What is it about the sound that you prefer vs. a hollow or semi-hollow body? Just wondering, as I have several solids that produce great, warm jazz tones from the neck pickup in particular.

If Nugent can use a Byrdland for his stuff, I can use a Les Paul for Jazz. It`s mainly about the "touch" you have and not the guitar itself IMO.

I have a Gibson LP Custom which is great for Jazz, and a Strat is good as well, If Jeff Beck and Terje Rypdal can use strats so can I, I have an Oscar Schmidt semi-hollowbody which is suprisingly nice for Jazz, high fret access is difficult, but otherwise it rocks (Jazz wise).

I think that Jazz

I thought I read somewhere that Les Paul designed the Les Paul for jazz. Also, Pat Martino once told me his favorite "jazz" guitar was a Les Paul Custom which was stolen from him years back.

A Les Paul has always worked for me too- like Caretaker says, it's mostly touch- a friend of mine plays jazz with a strat and it sounds good. It's recognizable as a strat sound, of course, but the feel of the notes is proper and it fits in just fine.

Al Dimeola too. Les Pauls with Dimarzio Super Distortions in both positions for years.

i use a sadowsky custom tele (h-s-h) with joe barden pickups. it sounds amazing for any style but excels at a modern jazz guitar tone.

+1. A lot of people don't realize that some of Pat's early work was on an LP. Ed Bickert on a Tele and so on. Great point! :dude

Musicians define what "jazz guitar" is. Whatever anyone has ever played jazz through is a "jazz guitar." Somewhere, someone is playing this music through a Mosrite...and KILLING it. :D

I love LPs for jazz... they have a unique but very jazzy tone... different than the modern crowd, but i dig it.

A Tele with some fat strings plays and sounds great for jazz.

On YouTube, there's a nice video of a young Joe Pass laying down some jazz on a Fender Jaguar.

Les Paul himself plays pretty much nothing but Jazz. That should tell ya something. I think a fender tele with those wide range humbuckers would probably sound pretty good.
