View Full Version : What will I lose by replacing a v30 with a G12H30 in a 212?

I have a 212 closed back cab loaded with Vintage 30's and it can sound brittle with my amps lead channel. Having said that, I know that I'm always in the mix because of those pronounced mids. I know lots of people like the V30/G12H30 combination, and if I replaced one of those 2 V30's with this, would my amp still cut through in the mix? My assumption is that the G12H30 would balance out the sound more. However, my fear is that a "balanced" sound won't cut through the way the V30's do.

Anyone have a cab with 1 or each in it or have you heard one? What do you think?

From a purely practical point of view you will lose 60W of power handling - a V30/H30 pair is only rated for 60W because the power is divided equally, and the H30 limits the total.

I know the V30/H30 combination is popular, but I honestly don't think it works that well, mainly because of the low power handling of the H30. As well as greatly reducing the rating of the whole cab, it also means that the H30 will be driven right up to its limit (which IMO it does not like, and can get very edgy) before the V30 is even driven hard (which it does like, and sounds best like that) - the worst of both worlds.

IMO a Classic Lead 80 is a much better pair with a V30 - it keeps the 120W power handling, which is now limited by the V30, and it does let you drive them the right way round, the V30 harder than the 80 (which has similar characteristics to the H30).

You will have no difficulty cutting through with a V30/CL80 - you keep the upper-mid peak of the V30, but add more powerful bass and a sharper top-end too.

I didn't like the g12h/v30 mix either. I prefer not to mix speakers.

The G12H has a different midrange than the V30 and IMO it "fills in" something that's missing with the V30.

I agree......I think these speakers complement each other, but dont know what your power requirements are

I really love the V30/G12H mix. The G12H can be a bit harsh when new, but once it's well broken-in, it sounds great pushed, and the extra mids from the V30 round it out nicely.

I don't like the g12h in an open back, sounds good closed though
