Man, Nels Cline is a rare breed of sonic explorer.

Even in his most wacked moments, there is always a melody or story
being told.

How might one enter this world ?

How does one go about learning Nels Cline

I think his spaceship is orbiting a planet called "Tom Verlaine".

That first solo (w/ Wilco) was gorgeous.
What a fine/diverse musician.

Nels Cline & I have been friends for about 20 years.

He's the only one with keys to that particular spaceship, which is not to say you can't fly one of your own...

I've seen the video of you and Nels, very cool.

Yea, I see that he is unique. Do you do any of that stuff
or pick his brain.

How big was the flower pot that hit him in the head.
Can I get hit by it and become a genious as well. lol

Actually, just a little trick or two is all I ask.

like what combinations of effects might he use to sound
like the rain forest, or later when tractors are tearing down
the rain forest.

Gosh, I hope that wasn't too political.

Yes, and yes we've picked each other's brains back and forth a number of times, informally.

Basically - Nels really deeply loves what he loves. He is a voracious and knowledgeable listener. He has little patience for the frosting and jimmies and goes straight for the cake. He likes artistic emotional states on the edge of stability, be they tender and vulnerable or passionate and cacaphonous.

And he likes noise. Sincerely. Noises are like melodies to him.

Agree with Wayne here ..

Was actually surprised how lyrical that was ...
& that he got such a sweet tone with that guitar ..
The man is musical to the nth degree ..

Wilco is taping an Austin City Limits this Saturday. I'll be sure to hover around his and Tweedy's pedal board.

They're incredible and I'd hoped that was implied w/ my statement about his being a "fine/diverse musician".

Very simply, I'm more familiar w/ his work in the context of the last three clips and have heard little of his work w/ Wilco. Was a wonderful surprise.
