Does anyone have a recent SG Special (P90's/Small guard) like this year?
Please tell me what the neck is like. Thanks.
Pete.

I haven't played an '07 SG Special but I have played 2 '07 VOS SG Standards and both necks were fairly slim. I'm not sure they were as slim as my '61 RI but definitely thin in compairson to any 50's neck on other Historics.

I did play one at a shop a few months ago. I thought the neck was a bit flat front to back. More like a flat D shape. Not much taper from the nut to the 12th fret. Certainly not as full as the beat up '62 Melody Maker doublecut next to it, which also had a way nicer acoustic voice. Should've bought that one.
BTW, love the model but don't like the fake, bleached cherry on RI SG's very much.
Cheers,
Z.

I have a VOS SG Special, and the neck reminds me a lot of the VOS SG Standard, in case you've ever played the VOS Standard. I enjoy the neck shape on them, but then I can switch back and forth between the SG and an R7 without any problems.
I think the color portion is kind of hit and miss, my Standard started off almost orangeish, but then turned into more of a faded cherry. My SG Special was a deep cherry color when I got it (used). The Special's color is just beautiful and perfect for an SG.

I've got one. I love the neck on mine and I generally hate the 60's slim taper necks. It's a little thicker than the slim tapers I've tried before. I absolutely love this guitar!

All I can think of when I see this guitar is Santana at Woodstock. What a kick ass guitar.

Nice piece, Shnook.
I wonder whether I can find one in TV White (as opposed to TV Yellow)?
Best, Pete.

Yeah,I think of that too.Soul Sacrifice !
Christmas Eve of 1989 I saw a 65 special in a pawnshop in Downtown Oakland for about $395 .I didn't get it because I was outa the vintage/collectable whatever electric guitar biz at the time.
Of course I kicked myself for many years.I plunked down $1100 for that '65 special I have now back in '02.It might even be that same guitar I passed up in '89.Best p-90s ever

Alvin, I have a similar story. My first real good guitar was a 1964 cherry SG Special with stop tail from the factory. Purchased used in Philadelphia in the fall of 1978 for $300. Used mid 70's Les Pauls were $500 and my dad wouldn't sport the extra dough! I sold that SG about 3 years later as part of a trade for a new Silverface Deluxe Reverb. I think the store gave me $150. trade value on that SG. Every time I see them at Guitar Shows now selling for $7-8K I kinda cry!! Killer P-90 loaded slab of mahoghany.

FWIW...I saw Aerosmith last night at Nissan Pavillion and Joe Perry opened up playing a cherry SG Special (with, I think, a TOM-Stop setup if memory serves me). No idea if it was a vintage specimen or a Historic RI of some kind, but it sounded pretty good. He actually used that more than any other guitar that night as a matter of fact. Surprising for a guy who changes guitars more during a show than nearly anyone I've ever seen. :D Very nice looking nonetheless.
