View Full Version : Best speaker for home use DRRI?

I'd like to try a new speaker in my DRRI - it's got the Jenson speaker. Broken in, it sounds pretty good overall, but it's a bit fizzy with med-high gain distortion, especially on the high end. It's also a hair "bitey" with the cleans for my taste. So, a more focused, slightly less bright speaker with roughly the same characteristics is what I'm looking for!
Keep in mind I play at bedroom volumes (2-3) so I'm not looking for headroom or an efficient speaker like a Celestion V30. So far I'm thinking maybe an Alnico speaker possibly and have heard good things about the C-Rex and some of the Weber speakers. Just need some help narrowing it down.
Any good suggestions from the gurus?

Emi Cannabis Rex or Tone Tubby Ceramic will tame those "fizzy" and "bitey" tones.

Thanks John,
I see the Cannabis rex is a 50w and Tone Tubby 40w. I guess lower would be better for home use? The price differance for the ceramic speakers are about $50 ($90 vs $140 for the Tone Tubby).
Anyone have experience with these two speakers in a DR?
Thanks,
Rick

Wattage ratings have nothing to do with how loud the speaker is.The cannabis rex is better suited to jazz and blues.Get something like a Red White and Blues or a Texas Heat.A Jensen P12Q is really warm sounding and has a nice overdriven tone.A P12N is killer. The Red Fang is a British flavour of distortion and really loud.
I find the cannabis rex to be great sounding but the above mentioned speakers sound better overall IMHO.

i have the tone tuby ALNico, around 275.00 i think, its all ill put in a deluxe, great speaker. Alnico cures the ice pick of a deluxe.

Tonally the Red Fang sounds like what I'm looking for (judging from the clips on their site), but I'm not looking for a particulary loud speaker. I'll look into the the others you mentioned.
Right now I'm considering the Weber 12F150B (British flavor of the 12F150), and the Tone Tubby Ceramic. Very difficult to narrow it down without hearing them. What's the best way to contact Weber - I see there no phone # listed on their site?

Ted responds readily to emails. There should be a link there. He's very helpful with answering such questions. Just tell him what you're after and he can suggest which if his speakers fits the bill. Where he knows, he can also tell you how it might compare to such-and-such other speaker make/model.
As others have said, you can't tell totally by looking at the specs whether a speaker will be load. However, a less efficient speaker will in general not be as loud.

I use a Weber 12F150 (ceramic) in my DR II and it's an excellent match from the standpoint of gain structure--without actually measuring for things like efficiency and such, my intuitive impression is that the amp devotes more of its limited power to driving the rest of the circuit as opposed to the speaker. Big difference from the OEM Emi. Tone-wise it's all a matter of personal taste, but gain structure is rather more an objective thing, so I would expect the Weber B-spec to do similar things for your amp.

...but one of these days I'm gonna hafta break down and snag an RW&B or a Texas Heat and give 'em a whirl--I consistently hear a lot of good things about 'em.
