Just snagged a decent sounding lefty Sigma DM-3, tuners are crap, nut is plastic. Is Tusq the way to go for low bucks and good tone? Bridge nut is craked and needs replacing to, suggestions there?
Overall a really nice sound guitar with a fat neck...for $97 out the door!

You said 'bridge nut"...can i assume you are referring to the saddle?? Nuts are near the headstock...
I do about 100 of these a year as a guitar tech in Memphis...
Either way, Tusq is a very good material for cutting out a nut or saddle, I prefer micarta myself if using a synthetic substance...i generally prefer pre-ban ivory or bone (although the density of bone can be inconsistant), and have made a few out of bison horn...saddles or nuts are not difficult to make youself if you have a dremel, saw, and some basic skills...there are several websites with tips like www.frets.com if you do cut you own, for goodness sake, wear a breathing mask!

Jobu,
Thanks for the info. I did mean both the nut on the neck and the saddle. The saddle is cracked and needs replacing and the neck nut is some cheap plastic....

Check out Bob Colosi saddles. You can also buy nuts from him.

1+ on Bob Colosi. He'll even copy the nut with slots and shape the saddle if you send him the originals.

I use a tusq nut and it sounds fine to me. My guitar sounds very balanced, has great definition to the notes and has a long sustain. I got mine from stewmac and sanded it to fit my guitar. If your sanding the saddle by hand like me, it takes a bit of patience.
