oooh...the album sounds are different than the live sounds IMO. Trent processes and synthesizes the hell out of things to create textures that are hard to touch in the studio.

There was a thread about this a while back...or a sidetrack within a thread. Let me see if I can find it. :)

I agree - far too many factors in a NIN distortion.

I read a while ago that he really loves the Way Huge Swollen Pickle but I think with all his effects he has all sorts of filters and stuff ontop of them.

I guess best to find out what he uses live - im guessing it could be some kind of rack preamp

Listen to some sound clips of the Zvex Machine in front of a distortion box..... definetely in the same vein.

The key to NIN sound is Heavy Fuzz + some bitcrushing + Eq

Yes. Trent definitely had (has) a Machine. I remember when he got it. It was when I first heard of ZVEX ('95?). He sings thru a Maestro Brassmaster sometimes too.

Do you have a particular album in mind for your guitar distortion?

I had the album with "Head Like a Hole", and you could get that type of distortion fairly easily with most modelers/digital OD pedals by cranking the gain and getting some digital clipping. (well at least for recording purposes)

autopilot: nice pics man. Those are amazing walls of noise making. He must be able to heat his house with all those Doepfer modules!

I love this thread, but as a bass player I have nothing to add other than the Boss FZ-2 nails that recent NIN bass fuzz tone, it's horrible for any other music though.
