Converting/Upgrading A Computer

Have any of you guys upgraded your XP based PC to make it a better platform for recording. Maybe stuff like more RAM, bigger hard drive, somehow get rid of all the Internet related junk like email, browsers and stuff like that. Also maybe add a fire wire connection?

Adding/upgrading components is very easy on most systems. You just need to check if you have free slots for more RAM or PCI slots for for the Firewire card. Also, when picking a new hardrive (for more space and faster speed), you should make sure you pick the right interface (IDE or SATA).

As to getting rid of old crap-ware/spy-ware, there's a lot of freebie apps that'll do that for you -- or you could just reinstall XP and start fresh (what I normally do).
