Bought myself a new Marshall 1960AHW cab so I could use my Jubilee 2555 100 watt head again. The Jub's been in storage for about 5 years and has a fair amount of hum plus volume drops every now and then and then cuts back in at normal volume. I guess the filter caps are the culprit and am planning on taking the amp to a tech next week for a service. I have some new GTEL34M's to put in as well but just wanted some opinions on what I should get put in if the filter caps are in need of replacement. I'm not sure if these affect tone and as the amp is original and getting more valuable, I don't want to do anything that what adversely affect the tone or the value.
Thanks,
Paul

We've been using the F & T and JJ Brands for Marshalls. check out www.tubesandmore.com

The TAD brand caps from Mojotone are good as well.

Those are the two brands that I would recommend as well.

What are the reviews on the JJ's? They've been out for a few years now but I have not tried them.

I can only speak of our experiences with them.....we've had zero failure issues with them..unlike the Sprague Atoms we used to use.

Same for the F & T brand.

We did recap a Fender with the TAD brand a few months ago and they seem to be on par with the JJ's and F & T's.

Great, that's what I was wondering. Spragues are just too expensive anymore. Thanks

I just did a JCM 900 re-cap (partial, only one cap can had to be changed) using Antique Electronics' generic (chinese?) dual 50uF cap can and it worked well, sounded great and was a drop in replacement. Too soon to tell about the durability, but so far so good. It compared favorably to the JJ and F&T's, sounded the same and was (externally anyway) as well put together.

Worth a look and half the price of the F&T.

Both F&T and JJ are fine. I get so tired of the crap at Plexi Palace over the filter caps- how they say F&T are better- which is nonsense. I like PP but the filter caps should be replaced after around 15 yrs. Talk to the real pros and not guys who have yet to see amps of failed caps. PP is an excellent site but many are dead wrong on the filter cap issue. I have yet to hear an amp after a cap job sound worse. Todd Sharp is one of the best and they did a test of the difference between JJ and F&T. There was virtually no difference in tone.

Talk to Mike at KCA, Todd Sharp at Nashville Amp Service, Joel Turza also in nashville, Paul C. at Heritage amps, etc. Here's good one:

"my amp was working well before". This right before the caps failed. Every single top amp tech I know will tell you stories of those failed caps. I've seen a few failed ones and it's not a nice thing to happen to your precious vintage amp.

Just replaced the 2550 Jubilee head with F&T, sounds tighter and tuned up a bit over the aged LCRs. Still curious here what the options may turn up.

The Chinese ones must be the ARS? used in the JH Marshall and RI?

I've been using the ARS caps that Marshall put in the vintage reissues. I actually get them direct from Marshall because I'm in the UK and they're as cheap as anywhere else, and they are guaranteed to fit :). A big problem with caps for amps like older Marshalls with chassis clamps is that they are getting a lot smaller with modern cap technology - in some cases as little as under half the diameter and length of the originals (ie less than 1/8 the volume!).

Personally I do not believe that the brand of filter caps makes any difference to the tone, just the value and possibly the physical size (and I'm not even sure about that).

Remember to change the bias filter caps too BTW - they actually more commonly fail than the main ones (very often partially, so they drag the bias voltage too low). Any cap of the right value and voltage rating (or higher, on both counts) will work perfectly, and these definitely have no tone impact whatever.
