Nothing in this world can touch a solid rhythm section.

Nothing.

While I absolutely LOVE the Who, and don't consider any band without Entwhistle & Moon worthy of the name, I don't think I ever thought of these fellas as a classic example of a solid rhythm section. When I think of solid rhythm section, I immediately think of Duck Dunn and Shot Jackson, Jamerson & Benjamin, Sly & Robbie, Bernard Odum & Clyde Stubblefield, etc. who would all join the bass and drums together to create a union of groove-dom. I never think of the word "groove" in association with the Who. Their music, in general, is not much groove oriented. John and Keith more or less propelled the tunes along through the use of friction; seemingly playing against each other to propell the tune along. I wouldn't want to hear a rhythm section try to "groove" a Who song. Just my opinion...

I agree it I wouldn't call Keith and John a "solid rhythm section"--they were way beyond that. 'Groove' too is somewhat a matter of semantics. If you mean "danceable", then I agree people don't dance to the Who. Getting into the 'groove' with the Who is more like watching in awe as a tornado touches down on a volcano.

Certain bands have/had tremendous drummers and bassists that were much more at the forefront of the music. Entwistle and Moon, John Paul Jones and Bonzo, Geddy Lee and Neil Pert, Chris Squire and Bill Bruford/Alan White, Mike Rutheford and Phill Collins Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker etc.
These were amazing combinations of musicians, but not what I think of when someone uses the term "solid rhythm section".

Teams like Musicofanatic5 listed, and Double Trouble, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard (ZZ Top), Malcom Young and Phil Rudd (AC/DC) spring to mind. They seem to fit that idea of the unsung heros towards the back of the stage that help make it all happen while the spot light is on the singer or guitarist or other featured soloist at center stage.

Cheers,

Edward

umm, in my view...and I love the Ox and Moon...they were the LEAD players most of the time in the band...the Ox driving and flourishing, and Moon propelling and commenting...leaving the guitar player...whasisname...to punctuate.....

As a lifelong Who fan and bass player, that's about the best description I have ever heard ....:BEER
