View Full Version : The reason why I own nine guitars

That's what can happen to some folk when they spend an indiscriminate amount of time at this place. The chase for new gear becomes more exciting than playing guitar. Turn your PC off for a couple of weeks and get re-acquainted with the sheer joy that is playing guitar.

Funny how I went from 1 to 6 in a short time, justifying them all.
#2 - "I want another one I can leave tuned down a step"
#3 - "A semihollow is totally different from my Strats"
#4 - "I always wanted an LP"
#5 - "I need something cheap to take on vacation, all the other ones are so nice..."
#6 - "I really need a good acoustic"
This GAS attack is interruped by a lack of legal tender, and the place to put them all.

Hmmm....
1. '68 Melody Maker, beat to crap. Got this for my daughter 11 yrs ago, she gave it up so I took possession.
2. '85 MIJ Strat - traded an old scanner for this, loved how it sounded for rhythm
I had those two guitars only from '96 - '05. Then I moved back east to get married....
3. '05 Stellar Les Paul copy. Couldn't afford the real deal right then.
4. '05 SX bass. Gotta have a bass for home recording!
5. '05 MIM Telecaster. Christmas gift from wife
6. '06 No-name lap slide. Birthday gift from wife.
7. '07 Peavey ES-335 copy. Wife said we had to get it. Okay!
8. Traded my wife's old amp for an Epi Dot, not sure of year.
9. Coup de grace - '06 R9 Les Paul Standard VOS, which I'll be getting as a Christmas present this year.
More to come, that's for sure.... :RoCkIn

I'm over 30, though I may try to sell some to raise some cash for my new Collings CL.
:o
The OP is a great reason. But here are my personal justifications.
Big Acoustic Guitar. '72 Martin D-28S. It's a 12 Fret Rosewood Dread, sweet and balanced for such a big air pusher.
Small Acoustic Guitar. '05 Martin 000-18 Custom. My shortscale 'hog jewel. Records so nicely.
12-String Acoustic. '69 Guild F312NT. Rosewood Minijumbo for the win.
12-String Electric. '65 Guild Starfire XII. Semihollowbody for the win.
A Gibson. '76 Les Paul Custom. Original Nickel Hardware, my Black Beauty.
A Fender. '07 Eric Johnson Strat. Ya gotta have a Strat.
Proof that I have GAS. '07 '62 RI Thin Skin Sonic Blue Jazzmaster. No good reason it's here except it's cool and funky and I like it. Plus, it's too cute for my wife to kick out of the house.

I have several-some come and go, but all sound different and have an effect on how and what I play. I have 4 amps and a modeler thingy too. Here's my keeper stuff:
1981 Yamaha G65 classical-kicks around the house, I've recorded parts with it
1968 Yamaha FG 180 w/ Sunrise p/up- best dread I ever heard-records great, sounds sweet live thru an amp-"go to" acoustic
1961 Silvertone acoustic-huge neck, cheap plywood, looks kewl, sounds "delta-approved" my porch guitar
1963/ refin relic Strat with Elliot Mechanic neck-best Strat EVER-even dusts my sweet original 62!! (62 is a museum piece-gotta sell it one of these days)
19?? Partsocaster-actually belongs to my drummer, but it's my main recording Strat due to noiseless p/ups-awesome player!!
1951 Precision Bass reissue (japan ca. 1992) main bass
1985 Rickenbacker 4001 bass-sees a lot of recording use
1972 Telecaster Custom reissue (mexican ca. 2000) main tele-has a T-Zone splittable bridge p/up
1977 Greco EG 450-modded to be like Beck's-hollow inside-wraptail, 70's Dimarzios, Grovers-I play more solos on thsi than anything-searing hot arena rock tones-controlled feedback for days!
1981 58 Fliyng V reissue-thick, midrangey-intense guitar with a huge neck and feather weight-has taps on the pickups-sees tons of rhythm use, and is the guitar I always use for the encore-it's a tradition!
1970 Les Paul Custom-I got it used in near mint shape, now it's a heavy relic-owned almost 25 years it's my most treasured.
1972 Les Paul Std Limited Ed.-refinned, set-up with a Bigsby and 2 p90s-Ilove it's snarling grit/pristene cleans-My singer likes to have his pic taken with it!
1977 Les Paul Artisan-refinned,Bigsbyed,Grovered,jumbo refret, PRS HFS lead p/up and 2 T tops, modified switching-15 pounds of evil, This one has a seriously fast neck-I used this one a lot live, had more fans than I did!
1992 Les Paul Classic Premium Plus-been broke and repaired a bunch-mean Texas Pearly tone-still a mainstay guitar for vintage Lester tone-supre fast wide neck-blistering action-guitar hero guitar! Stunning top, too!
1986 Gibson SG 62 reissue-Grovered, Maestro trem added-all time southern rock champ!! love this one, it gets a lotta use, but I'm still in the honeymoon phase with it
1988 Burney Les Paul Junior copy-killer 2 tone single cut axe-weighs 6 pounds-lollar p90-used for lots of overdubs/doubling-very thick rich 50's tone
AMPS-Marshall 4010 JCM800 combo, 63 Fender Vibrolux Reverb, 1981 Lab L5, GK bass head/Aguilar 1-12 cab
I have other vintage guitars and buy and sell them to fund my hobby, but the ones above are all played and used very regularly. Seems like a bunch, but I don't generally sell off my "players"

What are you missing?
I've got the following
1 Fender Flat top pos.
2 Stella Harmony 12 String.
3 Grammer G-10 as nice as anything out there Walnut.
4 Johnson POS reso. It is a POS.
5 Yamaha nylon string cheapie with electronics.
6 1/2 size electric Maya white neck thing.
7 Stratoparster White neck and nice, in a former life it was a Lead II
8 DeArmond S100 12 string.
9 Guild Blues Bird. A hard guitar to beat.
10. Fender Tele White cap 68 I've had it forever it has a PAF in the middle.
11. Les Paul Goldtop LE
I need an ES 336, a Santa Cruz Tony Rice, Gretsch 6120, National 14 fret Reso, Jazz box of some sort, Macaffari........It never ends.
I almost forgot the Trussart, I need one of those because they are so nice. Also my friend Davis at JDB needs to make me a custom Tele like model he call The Luna. I'd get it different but sorta like that one.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b109/donster10/IMG_0172.jpg

I've had my PRS Modern Eagle for almost a month and my prediction that it cured my GAS (G for guitar and not Gear) has held true.
I just ordered a 25 Watt Amp head, tube, point to point, that I need for the office "Jamming Room", but that doesn't really count.
With a '72 Strat, Les Paul Classic w/ WCR GWs & DBs, R9 Les Paul, PRS Holllow Body I Artist/Piezo, Taylor 815CE, Washburn Mrtn copy, Washburn acoustic 12 String, and the ME, I'm happy with my "stuff".
Besides, my wife made me give my word that I wouldn't buy anymore guitars without selling one first.

the house is worth about 20X more than the guitars. (the picture doesn't do it justice, it's small, but nice, pictured is my neglected backyard, not the front of the house) not all my guitars are pictured (although those are the "nice" ones)

jeffwith1f (http://www.thegearpage.net/board/member.php?u=30312): something about that house screamed Toronto to me before I even saw that you are a fellow Torontonian. Looks east-end to me... four years ago I was house-shopping and I saw a lot of backyards uncannily like that... all in the Leslieville/Riverdale/Danforth area.
Anyway, though we have quite different tastes in guitars, I have in total the same amount you are showing in your pic. Good to know there's a few of us about who suffer from the same GAS issues.

I don't horde guitars. But I do a lot of buying and selling. I've had to have bought at least 12 guitars in the past couple years. Right now I've got 4 frontline electrics and a nice acoustic.
I've never liked the feeling of having a guitar I don't play. I feel like I'm neglecting her. And when you do crack the case after long dormancy, the guitar always feels so out of whack.

The key is to keep them all on stands so that they get picked up...

You guys and Lord Byron have it all wrong. We are just looking for that special sound that will distinguish us from everyone else or elevate our tired improvisiations into something special.
Jeff,I have a similar picture from 1978 of a studly young man with with plenty of hair and about 15 guitars leaned up against a corvette.....I will make another next year, none of the hair is left and only one of the guitars, a 62 330, but they have been replaced by some that are much nicer and I am still studly..........Lord Byron be damned.

I deal with the hair loss by adding more guitars (and cutting it shorter).
it's kind of the same......
I think I blew past the justification that "I use alot of different tunings" as to why I keep getting them quite a while ago. That justifies about 6 of them.
I think the simple fact that I own 24 instruments is that I find guitars to be beautiful. They are a joy just to hold, and then when you have it pugged into an amp that you've got dialed in just right, and you're playing something just so...well....shivers.
still. so pretty to look at.

Agreed
getting my pic of the 16 above took me several days of transporting instruments from the places I keep them to home (they are rarely all in my house), and then at least 2 hours of getting them all out. getting the stands prepped. organizing the backyard. moving them all carefully outside. taking 3 or 4 frames of picture, then doing everything in reverse.
I can't imagine trying to set up a shot with 79. yikes. that would take all day.
also, it would need to be a fairly large picture to get any detail
though I'm sure we'd all be duely impressed.

And I thought we Canucks were such sensible types.
Here's why it's sensible:
For a while I'll have the twins, and enjoy the experience of evaluating supposedly identical guitars, all the while, enjoying the lessons that can be gleened about how "same" guitars can differ. This info I shall share with all.
Then, when I'm done, I'll keep the one I prefer, and sell the other for what should be a tidy profit. If the completed sales on eBay are anything to go by, I should make between $200 - $300 over what I paid already.
Worst case: I can't recoup my money, so I won't sell, and will have 2 of these for a while. They were not terribly expensive, so I'm not out that much money. If these can't turn a profit right away, I'd wager that they'll be worth more in 10 years.
Like it, or lump it, it's still the most interesting thing to come out of the Guitar of the Week program by most accounts (unless they sneak something really exciting into the last 4 weeks) and I suspect that will keep them in demand with people that like freaky Gibsons.
NeoConMan

No matter how odd or funky, a Gibson will ALWAYS be worth something.
You might not get rich, and it might not sell immediately, but all you need is one guy to see it and say "Wow, I've always wanted one of those!!!"

50 guitars and not one V?
come on...
Holy Crap. Just a routine check a half year later and..everything is gone but the Martin D28S and the Guild F312NT. The other five guitars were either traded or consigned or sold so I could get the following:
Gibson J45. OK that was a good move, I admit.
Fender Custom Shop Rosewood Telecaster. Another winner.
Guild Starfire II Special. Amazingly my current electric fave, love the instant feedback.
Kelly Bowery Tele. Being built.
And a '66 Guild F47 on consignment at Musurgia so I can get a LG2 for my kid, it's 3/4th sized.
So wait. I had seven, I got rid of five, got three more, waiting on 2, which leaves me with...seven. Man I got it bad.

That's what can happen to some folk when they spend an indiscriminate amount of time at this place. The chase for new gear becomes more exciting than playing guitar. Turn your PC off for a couple of weeks and get re-acquainted with the sheer joy that is playing guitar.
Very well said. The chase for new gear.

My wife said to me last weekend, "Why do you take five guitars to your gigs?"
"Because I play them all," I said. It's true. Of course, I only use my red Strat on one song, but that's beside the point (it's tuned to open G).
Seriously, I switch guitars a lot during our sets. That's my thing. I have friends who take two and even just one guitar and think I'm nuts.
I have the guitars...why not taken them and show them off? :NUTS
