I am gonna be picking up some NOS tubes for my Tweed Deluxe clone here soon ( from Mike of course ) , and I can't decide which way to go on this .
I have been told the Brimar's are less bright than the Sylvania's , but since this amp has had some cruddy Ruby's in it that might already make it sound a little bright I don't really know which way to go...
I have heard the Brimar's are just the best creamy OD tone of all time in these things . But the Sylvanias have their fans too . Tough call , especially since they are only $15 apart in price for the pair .
I play a lot of old blues ( Lightnin Hopkins , Muddy , John Lee Hooker , Robert Johnson..etc ) a lot of modern Hilltop blues ( Junior Kimbrough , RL Burnside ...etc ) and a lot of blues based classic rock ( Deep Purple , Zeppelin , ZZ Top , ...etc ) so I like that slightly darker blues tone rather than say a bright SRV /Albert King , Buddy Guy tone .

I would hate to get the Brimars and discover it darkens my amp up too much though . ( this is my first 5E3 so bare with me if I am overreacting )
So help me out ! Which way to go ?

already goona go with a GE 12ay7 in V1 a JJ 12ax7 in V2 and a RCA 5y3 rectifier.

Tough call. If you have any upward room on the tone control, I'd say go with the Brimars. If you have the tone control dimed and find yourself wanting more treble, go with the Sylvanias.

For the kind of tone you're going for you might try removing the cathode bypass caps from the preamp or power amp. You'll get less gain and a warmer, spongier tone. If you want to try it out just lift the positive end of the cap and tape it off.

Gotta love those ol' NOS tubes. :drool I really like the sound of the GE 6v6gta's too.. big and clear, with nice distortion character. FWIW, the recent production EH and TungSol aren't too shabby either. Playing with different brands in the V2 spot on a deluxe can make some perceivable differences too. Mullard makes(made) a really great 12ax7, as did Amperex and RCA.

I can't comment on the Brimars but I like the woody tone Sylvania 6V6GTA's give me in my '58. They are a little bright, but that's with the volume below 4 on the dial. I find after that they sound real nice when the amp starts to compress.
