View Full Version : Fender Champ - Extension Cab suggestions?
Hi all, I have a '71 Vibro Champ coming my way soon, and I've just been mulling the idea of a nice 2X10 that would go with it. The Tremolux 2X10 cab looks nice but I'm not certain if the Champ is compatible.
Anyone have the right ohm matchups to suggest, and even speaker combos that sound nice in an extension cab in a 2X10 config with a Champ? Specific question I know, but my place is too small for any bigger cab, and I'd like something other than a 1X12 or 1X15. Thanks in advance!

Champs use a 4 ohm speaker, so you'd run two 8 ohm speakers in parallel, and disconnecting the builtin Champ speaker.
Ah that's great news, I think most 2X10s out there are 8 ohms so I'm safe. I'll just have to make certain that they're in parallel then. Thanks!
Oh, should both speakers be 25W?

FWIW I usually run my '69 VibroChamp thru a Marshall 4x12 wired for 4 ohms :)
Also, a while back I did a custom job for a Gear Pager in TX where we built a head cab for his Vibro Champ and a matching 2x10 square extension cab. Sounded great and looked cool too. I've got pictures somewhere.

I love to run my FrankenChamp into a closed-back Jensen-loaded 2x12, but the combo cab I built for it has a single Weber Alnico 10S, and it's an excellent match. I bet a 2x10 loaded with those would be terrific.

wow excellent ideas, thanks guys! especially as a bedroom rig it may never have to go past its own little speaker, but it's good to know that a 2x10 is doable and waiting in the wings!

The tolex is actually the same as you'll find on Blues Pearls of a certain age. My cab maker at the time used to do Hudson's stuff before Blues Pearl went down the tubes. He got stuck with a big roll of the stuff (along with various unpaid invoices, but that's another thread).
Man I scoured the place and I can't find a decent 2X10 for this champ, rats.

The internet is your friend. If you can't find what you want already made, there are easily hundreds of folks out there who would be happy to cobble one together to your specifications.
The guy who used to make cabinets for me (and Blues Pearl) is John Hinsdale. You can reach him at hins316 <at> kconline.com. A quick search of the amps & cabs forum ought to turn up all kinds of other vendors as well.
