A What?

I thought the AA864 was a Bassman?

Are you sure you have the correct number?

The guy I am (probably) buying the amp from says that it is a Silverface transitional (drip edge grille cloth) Vibrolux reverb and that the tube charts says AA864 on it. I know, I know, AA864 is bassman (I looked at schematic heaven). So, I don't know what's going on, that's why I asked.

I do Know that it has the GZ rectifier and I am wondering if it is really an AA964 VR?

If it has a GZ34 it's most likely a circuit with some or all blackface specs to it. There was an AB864 VR, so there might have been a short time when they produced an AA864. Or, they might have had some old tube charts and simply stuck them in the new models, not an unusual act for Fender. Is is the original rectifier tube? It might have been a 5U4 and due to the tube chart somebody put a GZ34 in it at some point.

Best to date it by comparing the schematics with the actual amp and dating it using pot codes or transformer codes.

I did a bit of searching on the web and found a specs sheet.
http://www.cnjradio.net/fenderamps/vibrolux_reverb_bf.html
Year:1964-1967
Model:Vibrolux Reverb
Circuit:AB864, AA964, AB964

It may indeed be a blackface variation as mentioned above. I still have not found a good schematic.

I ended-up buying the amp. Wow, this sucker gets loud and has that classic Fender sound in spades! I looked-up the serial number on this web page:
http://www.tcguitar.com/articles/gagliano_pt5.html
And it indeed indicates 1969 and indicates SIlverfaces as having circuit AA864 (and AA964, AB568, AA270 )

Strangely enough it (the web page) also indicates that Blackface VR's used the AA864 circuit too!

Just about the time you think you have all the odd amps cataloged another variation turns up.

Congrats on getting a killer amp. You should really do a good photo documentation on the guts.

FWIW, I just noticed today that my BF VR (1965, FEI) that has AA864 listed on the tube chart. Also, it has what appear to be the original (?) RCA blackplates as well as a 5U4GB rectifier, which is listed as the correct (?) rectifier on the model AA270 Vibrolux Reverb schematic here: http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/schem/vibrolux_reverb_aa270_layout.gif. Tube chart says GZ34, btw, so I guess they shipped with what they had...

Tube chart is stamped 'OF' and serial number on chassis is A01602, consistent with June, 1965.

Interesting confusion, eh? Hey, all I know is that this amp is a keeper. Probably never sell this one.

...some of the smaller Fender amps didn't "change" over the years.
