I've seen this on a few old projector amps I have and was wondering exactly what it was called? Some kind of black coated ground buss?

sure looks like a resistor to me

It is a wire wound resistor. Usually precision value, high wattage.

More explicitly, isn't that a VARIABLE wire wound resistor? Check out the right 1/3rd.

Yeah that is definitely what it is! Thanks. Any ideas why it would be connected to the 8ohm speaker out of my old Bell & Howell speaker amp output jack one the right with the yellow wire but not the 16 ohm? The dark red part on the far right of the pic and straight across from it has what looks like an adjustment screw in the middle of a red plastic cylinder that is then wrapped in some kind of thread and is attached to the resistor by the black wire...
