View Full Version : Converting a Peavey Hybrid Amp to an all tube amp?

I have an older Peavey Classic VT series amp. Its the solidstate preamp tube power amp. I was reading reviews on this amp and one reviewer said that he converted the solidstate preamp into a jtm stlye preamp with tubes. I'm assuming he added some tubes and changed the transformers? Does anyone know how to go about doing this sort of mod? I have never built an amp before, but I have read up on the safety aspect.

The layout of the front pannel goes:

Bright 1/4", Norrmal A 1/4", Norrmal B 1/4", Automix 1/4", Bright volume, Norrmal Volume, Bass, Mid, Treb, Depth (phasor), Rate (phasor), Reverb, Master Volume, and a Jewl Lamp.

I'm assuming the Phasor, and Reverb are solid state circuits, so I would probably loose those. The power switch is on the back, which is kind of a pain, so ideally I would like to put that on the front.

I was thinking a tweed bassman would be a good fit.

the front pannel Layout would be:

Norrmal A 1/4", Norrmal B 1/4", Bright A 1/4", Bright B 1/4", Norrmal Vol, Bright Vol, Treb, Bass, Middle, Presence, Standby, Power, Ground switch

So would a newcomer be able to order a prefab turret board all wired up, and install one into this style amp. Has anyone done this sort of conversion? Would I be better suited to just build a bassman with better transformers etc? Thanks.

To be brutally honest, if you haven't built an amp before this project isn't for you.

Until you've successfully built (at very least) a moderate complexity tube amp kit, a project like this will likely result in frustration, wasted money and time.

Agreed. Start off with a much simpler kit.

For that matter, you will have to replace pretty much everything to make that amp into anything resembling a tweed bassman, so you would be better off building a bassman seperately and selling off the Peavey.

Yeah the more I read about this, it seems like I will have to measure a bunch of things, and basically create a bassman like amp with the parts I have. It won't ever be like a bassman as is anyways.

How bout a simple low wattage amp with a line out? Any nice easy to build circuits out there? That way I can run the line out into the Peavey I have and take advantage of the Tube power amp, and bypass the solid state section with the effects loop?

Thanks
