Just curious...I've been messing around with getting a Fulldrive 2 lately and love how it sounds, but I've seen more than one person say "xxxxx OD knocked my FD2 off my board", etc...just curious as to what people have found in that vein "OD and boost" that they like better...can be separate pedals...

T-Rex Moller. Does the FM and Vintage modes and has an independent clean boost. PLUS it has the mix/blend knob of the Sparkle Drive.

umm....different stuff... not necessarily in the same vein though...

once it was a BoR, once a GT-500, also a Diamond Comp, and now a klon.

Alright, I don't want to be the jerk here, but honestly, the FIRST pedal to knock the FD2 off my board (4 years ago or so), was the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive. The TWENTY-SECOND pedal to knock the FD2 off my board, was the Eternity. In between, a whole lotta pedals, including just modded pedals (two different Analogman tubescreamers, Keeley Blues Driver), Barber pedals, Tonefactor pedals, HBE pedals, Catalinbread pedals, Foxrox pedals, Lovepedals, need I go on? To me the FD2 was an adequate tubescreamer with a boost you could not run independently. If you want a tubescreamer with a booster, get a Foxrox ZIM, it's about a hundred times better (IMHO).
Again, not trying to be a jerk, I just REALLY wasn't impressed with the FD2, and it was actually given to me by a guy who thought it wasn't worth keeping.

No offense taken Wooley...not a lot of boutique pedals in my area to try out...just getting my feet wet

the Eternity. i could get every sound i liked in the FD out of the E, and they sounded better, with less compression, and alot more volume on tap

The FD2 Mos failed (by a longshot) to knock my Blackstone off the board.

It wasn't even close, IMO.

YMMV.

I had been a FD2 user the last 8 years. Tried the TIMMY. Tried the Klon. Tried the OCD. Tried the Sparkle Drive. Tried the Analogman TS9. FD2 remained a steady force.

Then I got a ZIM.

No more FD2

Fulltone GT-500. Very different and just what I needed for my rig. I liked the FD2, but it wasn't the type of OD I was looking for. Of course, YMMV.

Timmy and RC Booster. I did find the FD2 to work well driving an already distorting Marshall, but for my AC-15 and Maz run at the verge of breakup the Timmy and RC combo sounded a lot better.

Mi Audio blue boy deluxe and BB Preamp.
My FD2 mosfet was kinda dissapointing.
The BBD is much better and more versatile for TS type tones and more transperant amp like tones. Much better value too.

Although I really like the FD-2 Mos I ended up with a much smaller package the MI Audio Blues Pro, when used as a low gain pedal it has a very nice open tone to it so it sounds a little less like a Tube screamer and more like a gritty amp channel!

Suprisingly none. Everytime I buy or try another overdrive to replace it, I realise that there are some unique and beautifull sounds that other pedals just donīt have. I like it as much as my timmy, eternity and J-Drive TR. I tried about 30 overdrives so far and although I think that some pedals are way better in certain applications, for some of my needs the fulldrive is my go-to pedal.

I used to have a yellow custom shop FD-2 and sold it for a Hot Cake. In combination with my AC30, the Fulldrive had too much mids and compression. The Hot Cake sounds much more like the amp when it's cranked, which is what I wanted, so I think it was good decision.

I never really bonded w/ the overdrive of the FD2, tried a couple different units so I really only used it in Comp Cut mode as a boost into an OCD. Replaced it w/ a RC boost in front of the OCD and a BOR after the OCD.

Now I can hit the OCD and BOR in the front to kick up the gain a bit with the RC , or boost the whole mess after OD with the BOR boost section or any such combination. Kind of like Boost>OD>OD>boost

I agree with woude. I have tried the Klon, Eternity, Hotcake etc.. All great pedals, but for $160 you can't go wrong with the FD-II. However, don't mistake the boost function as a separate function like the ZIM and the GT-500. It just increases the gain of the pedal. It basically gives you two gain settings of the same sound, and I have found it very useful. If you want a boost/od combo pedal, I would have to agree with the member who recommended the ZIM, but you could get a Bad Bob Booster and a FD-II for the price of the ZIM and that is a killer combo.

I just picked up a BB Preamp and swapped it out with my FDll last night.I'm considering using the BB for just a hint of added gain and the FD ll for clean boost for solo's with my Bluesbreaker. I haven't fired up my mark lll with the BB on my board.

Hmmm....I'd say the Creation Audio Labs MK.4.23 boost with either a newish Maxon OD808 or a Zendrive pretty much do it for me, when played through a marshall rig...

I want to be clear at the outset that I like my FD2 a lot and it's become my primary "for the guy at the jam without available gear" pedal. However, the pedal that literally knocked it off my board is the green one. ;)

I had the Mosfet FD2 for a few months and could not bond with it at all. I'm now using an LTD Silver/Small Fry combination with a boost that RAILhead built for me. These pedals are way more flexible than the FD2 was.

I now understand that the boost function is not designed to act as a clean boost unless it's in comp cut mode, but I was pretty irritated when I first discovered that. Why can't you use the boost without the OD?

Why can't you use the boost without the OD?
For the same reason you can't fly in the air in your submarine: it's not designed for that.

I've used one but never owned one. Didn't stand up to my Burriss Boostiest. Nothing did for a long time.

Now I use a combo of LGW and Burriss Boost. This seems a bit more versatile and I like having them in separate boxes.

I actually like it much better that way. It makes it very easy to select either a lower or a higher gain sound before you even engage the pedal. Otherwise you have to switch two switches if you want to go from cleaner rhythm to a searing solo. I own the J-Drive TR, which has independant drive and boost and I know from experience that, for me, I like the setup of the fulldrive better. I have to add that the boost channel of the fulldrive sounds very good to my ears, I use it a lot. I like it better than a cleanboost into the normal overdrive channel of the Fulldrive.

First a Barber TP, then a Barber TP EQ, which is more of a dedicated 2 channel od with 2 volume and 2 gain pots. The FD II is a great pedal and I doubt I would ever sell my original one from '97.
