View Full Version : Play a Gretsch? What amp works best, d'ya think?

Hey,

I've been really digging the combo of a Gretsch 5120 (w/TV Jones, etc) into my Vox Ac30CC1. In fact, it kind of "saved" that guitar for me. Filtertrons----> Vox just seem to be a match made in heaven.

For you Gretsch guys out there........what amps are you digging?

curious,

Jim

'91 6120W with Filtertrons --> 6v6 Minimat (volume 10, tone 7, boost 8, attenuator 8). It makes me smile everytime.

I'm yet to try it with my DC30 as we've just moved house and the 'soundproof' room isn't that soundproof. But gretsch guitars sound great with pretty much any amp - EL** (AC/DC; Beatles), 6*6 (Pretty much any blues/country player ever).

I do reccomend that you set your gretsch up with flatwound strings (preferably with a round, rather than hex core) for optimum tone. Afterall, these guitars and their pickups were designed with these strings in mind, and they help to fatten up the sound of the G string too.

I'd also say just about any amp... but I do agree 6V6's and EL84's rule with my 6120!

I had the same exact experience with my recently-acquired Gretsch Anniversary (also with TV Jones upgrade pickups): sounds best with my AC30CC1. Still may not be enough to make me keep them (guitar and amp both), but they do work great together, and that Cadillac green is so purty.

Hey Jim - I thought you were selling the AC30CC1 recently. Did this make you keep it?

I have had a pile of Gretsches and played them through a pile of amps looking for the "right" amp for them. I prefer my Boogie MkIII and my Tech 21 TM-60 for Gretsch work. The TM gives you that nasty tweedy tone and the Boogie will do the brighter work. Also like my Kendrick Roughneck.

Any tweed Fender sounds great with a Gretsch. This clip also has wonderful Gretsch tone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFmKcHnMCyM I also like them thru an AC30 as well. But I like almost anything thru an AC.

2004 roundup 6121 (chambered solid body) w/dynasonics. So far, really loving it throught the Clark Tyger (tweed bandmaster), with the Twilighter 260 (same as Magnatone) a close second. Big, spanky clean tones, with some jazzier sound on the neck as you roll tone off.

Can't wait to try it with some other amps too.

My Setzers have loved every amp i've hooked them into, but for pure tonal shock and awe a Two Rock CR made everyone look up. Magical feedback and sustain. It really seemed to love that smooth D-style overdrive.

on the other side they screamed through a JTM and got down right nasty through a Mig50 and GH100L.

Great guitars.

I have a '97 6120-60. I haven't done the TV Jones upgrade yet. It gets along with most of the amps I own but here are some favorites.

Rivera S120-210 with a Space Echo in the loop. Rockabilly Heaven!
'68 Fender Bandmaster Reverb & 2 X 12" cab with JBL K-120's.
Vox AC-15, British made KORG amp. Nice compression as you crank it.

I also gig a lot with a Mesa Studio .22+ with an Altec speaker in it. I use pedals for distortion. I think this combination would make Neil Young smile.

Just picked up my Jet Firebird, so I'll have to hold off on that, but my church rig is a 6121 reissue thru an AC30 and it's a killer rig-sweet chime for the clean tone and it rocks with the Zendrive/Mosferatu combination for all my dirty tones.

I've got a super-tron loaded '66 Monkeys rock n roll model that is fantastic through the clean side of my Carr Slant 6V. You can get a nice grind out of channel 2 in you thottle back the gain to avoid feedback. The pickups were reworked by Mr. Fralin and are pretty hot but not to the point of being sterile. Over all is a gret guitar that doesn't get the playing time it should.

Sounds great through a Dr Z Route 66, too. The mids fill-in the dip in the TV Classics, perfectly.

My Gretsch 6128TCG Duo Jet through my 1959 20 watt Guild amp with added tube reverb has just about cured me of GAS. I can't believe how great it sounds. Even through my Fender Blues Jr it sounds great and the Jr is not a full sounding as the Guild.

I take a very traditional approach and run my 6120lh thru a 1963 Gibson GA19-RVT with a bit o' reverb and tremelo and my bob burt OD every here and there. Great old amp and super light for a 1X12.

I have a single bridge TV Jones classic guitar and have loved it through most Tweed amps I've played. The guitar has got me jones'n for tweed. It also sounds great through my Bad Cat Black Cat and BLC30TB/6. I found the pickup to be very sensitive to height adjustments and had to fiddle with that a while to get the best sound.

My Silver Jet seems to work best with my '79 JMP 50-watt head. No preamp gain or anything, just the power amp breakup (gotta use an attenuator, of course).

I don't play a gretsch, but one of my favorite guitarists, Brian Connelly (Atomic 7, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet) currently plays his through a Standel 25L15, which sounds great on the recordings. I believe he used a Super Reverb before that.

My Setzer sounds great through all my amps, but it sound better than awesome through my Bad Cat HC30, which gels very well with AC30 experience, and the folk who like a Matchless sound. The sweetness of the crunch has to be heard to be believed.

I ran my 6120 with Stock FilterTron pups through a Vox AC 15 was sweet, but looking for a better quality amp. I tried tons boutique handwired and PCB amps (list too long to mention. I tried the Valvetrain 315 next to the Bad Cat Classic, and the Valvetrain sounded richer more 3 dimensional and it does not have reverb! Loved it with the Bassman 59 LTD (RI -issue). I have not decided yet what I am going to replace my AC-15 since I am having a tough time deciding between EL 84 (Goodsell Super 17 MK III) and Swart AST MK II Head (6v6/6L6/EL 34). Soo many amps! So little cash! lol!

i play a gretsch silver jet w/ filtertrons. since the silverjet has a chambered body i feel like the mids are a bit subdued. i'm currently playing a tophat super club deluxe. i typically turn the mids up a bit to give the sound a bit more punch and i really dig it.

5120's are really dark guitars, and it takes a really bright amp to bring out that Gretsch sparkle. My JTM60 is ice-picky enough in the clean channel. Set the DMM for slapback, and you're in rockabilly heaven!

My Gretsch Brian Setzer Hot Rod through my '66 Vox AC50 and my '60 Fender Brown super is awesome. It sounds good through other amps, but those are my favorites. It worked well with the Vox AC15TBX and AC30CC1 I used to own as well. I think Gretsch + Vox is a great combo.

I did have to adjust the pole pieces of my bridge pickup on my Gretsch to get the guitar to really come alive. With the stock pole piece setting the bridge pickup just had very low output and there is no real good way to raise the whole pickup.

My Gretsch Duo Jet sounds awesome through my AC30cc2 w/ 1 alnico and 1 wharfdale.

I'm thinking about slapping another Alnico in there, but the sound I'm getting right now is pristine and i cant imagine getting more out of it with another. Maybe a mix n' match (greenback)???

So far, I'm satisfied.

Hard tail silverjet here with a tv classic plus in the bridge and a tv supertron in the neck. Great sounding with every amp I have tried. My 77 vt-40 loves it, I use it most with my vintage 50 watt Hiwatt halfstack. This amp matches the pickups upper mid ring perfectly IMO, a great combo. I am now jonesing for a brown concert, blonde or tweed twin, vibroking etc. I am anxious to hear how it sounds with a fender amp especially with ten inch speakers.

My wife and I stumbled across a band called The Coalmen (they opened for Monte Montgomery a few years ago). They are out of Nashville. We've seen them a couple of times and the guitar player plays a beautiful Gretch through a Super Reverb. He works all the controls on the guitar during each song more than anybody I've ever seen. His tone is just great. Check them out on youtube. You'll see his guitar too. Great player and band.

I don't have a Gretsch right now, though I've owned several, vintage and new. My tastes in amps have stabilized for the most part:

For raw and floppy (or clean at lower levels), I play a mid-50s Gibson GA-40. I love the way 6v6s in a simple tweed circuit tumble softly into break-up. When you start playing louder (especially with an archtop), the bottom gets loose. Great with a tele, not so great with a hollow box.

For a little tighter sound that's still fat, I play a '61-ish brown Fender Vibrolux, with 2 6L6s into a single 12" Weber. Like the other 6L6, Matchless, and Vox options above, it holds together better on the bottom end while still giving a nice musical break-up.
