Tried a few, the Bareknuckle is what I settled on.

I love the Lollars, but I wouldn't describe them as growlers. They are more articulate and sweet to my ears.

SD Antiquity P90?

Seymour Duncan Antiquities

I have a PRS that came with custom Seymour Duncan P90s - they were very aggressive. I liked them, but tried the same guitar with Lollars installed and eventually switched because I was looking for something different from the bridge pickup.

the Antiquities would be a great choice, I have used other antiquities and they are all great. The other maker you should consider is Peter Florance and his Voodoo P90's. I have two going in a custom build very soon and they are great pickups. Peter is a great guy too.

I've been through quite a few different 90s in my Goldtop and finally settled on a set of Lindy Fralins. I use a 5% underwind in the neck and a 10% overwind in the bridge. I've owned it for 18 years and the guitar has never sounded better. One of the best sounding Bridge P-90 I've heard.

Just picked up a VOS '58 Doublecut Junior and the stock pickup is a little bright. I believe I'll put a Fralin there as well.

Like a lot of smaller builders (guitars, pedals, amps and pickups) you can call and talk to Lindy, tell him what you're looking for and let him do his magic. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I wouldn't call the Lollars hot or aggressive.
The modern Gibby P-90s may be close to what you are looking for.

Another vote for Fralins. I have a -15% neck and stock bridge in my Koll (set up like an LP special), but you might want a stock/overwound combo. Compares nicely with the vintage '50s P90s I have or have played.

Lollars are nice, polite, high fi and beautiful. Nothing wrong with those traits...but they aint nasty to my ear- though I'm sure he could do them that way.

Get in touch with Budz. I'm sure that he can wind up what you want.

You refer to fifties, old fashion P-90's as hot. I never played a hot wound fifties P90, at least by today's standard of hot. Duncan's SP-90II or III are hot, as are the current stock Gisbons. Any one of the aforemented custom p.u. guys can wind you a hot one (pardon the expression).

The Gibson P-90s sound very good.

Wolfetone Meanest. He will make you anything you want and make it again if you are not happy. Sonds to me like you need his Meanest wind. Tell him to wind you what he did for me.

SD Antiquity P90?Those are pretty close to the P90s in my '53 175.

The new Gibson P90s ain't half bad, either.

Then, of course, there are Fralins, Lollars, etc. Just be sure to get a lower-output wind, which, in my experience, is typically closer to a vintage P90 than their "standard" wind, which I find too hi-fi sounding.

I have no experience with these but Bryan is a member here and winds his own. I've also never read a negative review and his prices are almost half what others charge.

Good luck in your search.

Jason Lollar has several available winds for his P-90's. Call him and tell him what your looking for and I'll bet he'll do it for you.

then you haven't played my '59 330. perhaps the word 'hot' was inappropriate. one man's 'hot' is another man's.......?

I agree, not bad at all.

The gibson P100's are cool as well, they have a coil tap so you go from a hotter wind of about 12K down to about 7.5K.

SD Antiquity P90 = The P90 from Seymour Duncan's Antiquity line. If they are as nice as their Tele and Strat Antiquity pickups, then they would be my first choice.

Believe it or not, the Duncan Vintage P-90 bridge pickup is wound a little hotter than I would have guessed. I have a set in my '95 LP Special and I must say I really like the sound of them. I have some Lollars in my Historic Special.
The Lollar bridge P-90 measures about 7.8 on my meter and the Duncan bridge is about 9.2. The Duncan is still articulate but more bottom and output than the Lollar.

Wolfetone makes mean higher output pickups, period. :)

Seriously, the Wolfetone Marshallhead set has to be the best humbucker set I've owned and the Mean/Meaner set has to be the best P90 set I've heard. Lollar makes some great pickups as well, but I think he strives to go more for a sweeter, lower output kind of tone. I've owned Lollar P90s and they are good pickups, but they're certainly not raw. Now, in my Firebird V, the Lollar Firebird minis give it that more vintage tone and in that platform I love it - it was just what I was looking for.
