Anybody know how to get a nice glossy sheen on a rosewood fretboard? Grosh seems particularly good at this. I once asked him for the secret recipe. He replied that the wood simply needs to be thoroughly polished and that most builders skip this step. So, polishing is obviously key. How about adding wax or any other compound to the usual oil? Thanks.

should always oil a new fingerboard.
polishing is all it takes to shine it up.

I always oil and polish a new board but some boards just look more lustrous and waxy, even Indian rosewood. Anybody ever try waxing a board?

when i finish levelling the frets on a rosewood or ebony board, my last step is to take it to the pedestal buffing wheel with the white compound. it gets a mirror finish on the frets and puts a nice polish on the wood (especially ebony). i then use naphtha to get the compound off the wood, and then follow up with a little lemon oil, in the theory that the oil will "put back" what the naphtha might have stripped out. it looks pretty good and feels really nice when i'm done. is there a better way?

On a new construction, it also helps to sand the board with progressively finer grit up through 1200 or finer before fretting. The board will then have a pretty good shine to it already before buffing.
