that was bad ass Jaz. so many good runs in there. I liked that part around the 2:00 minute mark, almost like a pedal tone kind of thing where you alternated between a few lower notes. Lotsa great ideas in here too!

JACK! It's like you're staring right through me in that video! Stop it! The look on your face says I have a boogie in my nose and you can see it!

Nice chops, though.

I love and have gotten a great deal out of Jack's Sheets of Sound books, and his playing generally. As far as this clip goes . . . all I can say is that there's something to be said about Space.

You started out playing the In The West version, nice. Now wrap that thumb over/around the top of the fretboard ;)

Nice licks!!!

Nice approach. The amount of mechanical/string noise is distracting, tho. Maybe need a higher output take?

You got chops, man.

Thanks for the comments. The recording was done at a pretty low level. I'll have to listen again regarding the string noise which several folks mentioned. It would probably be more realistic if I had the volume cranked up to real amp level in order to get some real amp/guitar dynamics going. It's also be interesting to run the axefx directly into the camera. I haven't tried that yet...

mr. zucker, thanks so much! please keep these videos coming! I already bought and now work with sos1 - so the metheny lick instruction was great and very helpful to figure that thing out. and that video here... wow. great!
Right now I'm going through the pat martino/benson section in your book, the staccato lessons is someting else... AGAIN!!! I love your playing - especially when you play all this benson stuff... just dead on man!

:D

happy customer here!

Interesting the comments under the video ...
Think it's great when people are expecting to hear the same ol' blues/rock stuff,
& the soloist takes it somewhere else ...
Thumbs up ..!!

Everyone knows Jack is one of my fave players on here, but this clip did nothing for me. Way, way, overplayed. Need space and phrasing. Its gotta say something. It was like a "Malmsteen learned how to play jazz" fest. :D Sorry Jack, but I always have to be honest. :o I would LOVE to hear you do a take and just flash those chops now and then. Like in those Maj7 and the older standard clips you made. :AOK

Jack,

As always, I think you're a stunning player, and really appreciate the time and effort you're putting in these vids.

I sorta have to agree with Tag (god help me) on this one, though. Not that I have a problem with you stretching.....it's more that it feels like two different players playing two different styles. I think you could have something there, just work on integrating the two sides a little more.

Good examples are HarryJ and ScottL when they play bluesy.............it feels a little more cohesive.

Of course, it could just be my jealousy that there's no chance in hell I could ever do that!! lol.

Have mercy fellows ...
Damn folk here have sure got some strong fixed opinions and/or expectations
of what a guitar solo should always sound like depending on context ...:jo

Yo ... I'm with Scottl Jack..

You think those of us who live on either side of America's coast
can get a discount on lessons if we flew you out ... ;)

Just to be clear......that's not what I meant at all.

I'm just saying that the "blues" and "jazz" lines don't sound like the same player, yet. It's good ideas, just not connected as a "whole" .

But, I think it's a cool concept, and I'm sure Jack will get it happenin' soon enough. He's an amazing musician, who I wish was out there gigging, recording his own cds, etc, on a regular basis, and getting the attention he deserves.

Great chops but felt cold and mechanical. Better than I play I'm sure though so maybe I shouldn't chime in.

I already KNOW Jack can do it. Listen to all of his other clips. I have a few where he totally lays back the entire time and KILLS. I just think in THIS clip he went for it to much. really mixing it up is what *I* like to hear. Ford went the other way to me. He now bores me with no real jazz playing, and stays mostly directly in the blues. Two opposite extremes to *me*. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks for posting this... now, time for me to get back to not being anywhere near that good....

awesome playing.. my mind just cant grasp jazz though.. to me it always sounds out of place, unless its a jazz standard tunes... it must be an aquired taste, kinda like fine wine... I'm kinda glad I dont really dig Jazz cause it would just open a whole can of worms for me.. and I can barely handle the standard penatonic boxy stuff.... anyhow, Jack your an awesome player..

I agree that the chops and playing were outstanding... I just couldn't grasp it for its musical quality. I didn't feel like I was still listening to "Red House" after the intro blues licks.

THAT'S THE POINT!!! There's already been jimi, srv and and bonamassa. Who needs another white guy playing ripped off blues licks! :BEER (when they can hear another white guy playing ripped off jazz licks) LOL

Neither of those guy sound the same though.

I don't know what the point of the vid was. You did that at a blues jam, I'd think you'd be ducking alot.

Don't get me wrong. I have a tremendous amount of respect for your playing and also your willingness to take a risk and try something completey new. I just couldn't recognize the song after a little bit in.

I've done that at plenty of blues jams and I'm still alive to tell the story. What turns me off more is the blues jams with some local yokal in their fodera hat and suade jacket and boots doing a bad SRV imitation. I'm not interested in jazz nazis or blues nazis. I'm sick of folks who want to hear the same licks for 5 generations standing in the back of the room with their arms folded and trying to look for reasons to invalidate someone's playing based on them playing licks outside of the genre. I admit this wasn't a great guitar solo but so what? Screw the white guys in the back of the room with their blues-rule-books. Quick - Lemme get my univibe and plexi clone so we can hear someone do jimi again. :horse

I ought to play feedback noise in Giant Steps for the same effect :crazy

No offense, but you couldn't do the Jimi anymore than I can play like a typewriter over Red House.

I never said I could play Jimi. I wouldn't even try. Too many middle aged house-husbands already posting jimi-imitations. Nice try...

Maybe you should think about it. The whole idea of being restricted to a set of rule books governed by folks who don't want music to evolve is a huge turn-off to me.

That was great Jack!

And the faces!!!!! LOL!!!!

I'm actually quite stunned by the negative comments......really.

It was pretty obvious to me this video was meant to be a total go-for-it, over-the-top thing, right?

Yeah, and Jack - I noticed the guy giving you a hard time in the YouTube comments section who "understood everything you played" became suddenly quiet when you asked him what superimpositions you were playing! LOL!!!!!!!

Guitar playing is supposed to fun (when it's not DEADLY serious), no???

More Videos!!!

Thanks Russ. As I said, i made no claim of being in the same "league" with jimi, srv or bonamassa. I'm just doing the song the way I feel like it without any preconceived notions of what is right or wrong. It's a just vehicle for improvisation. I have the utmost respect for jimi since he and I share a birthday. I can pay tribute to him without trying to ape him.

And ironically, I agree that this isn't a great solo. Let's use this to bounce some positive ideas about music instead of just calling names and pounding our chests....

i think the problem with jazz for a lot of people, including myself, is it just sounds like a bunch of notes and isnt musical .(IMO warning). now I dont know why some people get jazz and why some dont.. but I think thats what is going on.. like I said before, I think its an aquired taste.. I think thats why you dont see jazz artists selling out stadiums... anyhow, I'll say it again...Jack's chops are outrageous....
