I just got my vintage MXR block letter today. I must say it blends well with other pedals and or amps.
Here is a clip just using my solid state Roland with its drive channel.
The clip goes clean channel, then mxr, then dirty channel then with the pedal.
THe drive on the amp was only on 4! I couldn't dial out that blanket over the speaker on the drive,....not even by dialing the bass on 0, mids 3, treble 6, pres 0.... actually cranking the treble/ pres higher just added noise but it still sounded blanketed.... just the eq'ing of that classic drive channel, the metal or rect... were much worse.... hehe Too make matters worse, after I had the clean demo, I suddenly had a grounding problem...suddenly nasty buzzing , esp. on the drive channel that I couldn't eliminate so I just kept it cranked....
THe MXR isn't a gain monster. For example, pedal clicked on during the clean channel is totally cranked, you can also hear how bright the pedal is. BUT add it to the drive of the amp, even if the amp has only modest amt. of gain, wow, super drive and sustain! But, I am impressed with this pedal. An hour before the noise, and power got dirty ( there is a huge industrial area close to where I live that typically cause brown outs at night) the tone was much better still. I noticed the sound of the strat coming through believe or not! I wish I had no power issues when I recorded because the tone was much more clear and cleaner -no buzzing etc.... I think it is quite possible Ed used one of these or a DOD 250 in his setup.
I posted this originally on Metroamps/Eddie Van Halen Forum for the EVH tone chasers, so the clips are all Van Halen though not great playing...
