View Full Version : Scratchy volume pot spray?

A mate is lending me an 80s Schecter parts Tele. He had left it in storage for several years and now the volume pot is very scratchy. My local - and it's very 'local' where I live - repair guy recommended turning the pot rapidly several hundred times a day for a few days. Isn't there some kind of spray or solvent I can use?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Deoxit D5 by Caig is a "miracle" spray for pots & switches. Radio Shack tuner cleaner is fair & easy to find. DON'T use WD40 or oil based stuff (it will gunk up electroic stuff).

I use deoxit because I think it's the best but any good control cleaner will probably work. If it doesn't clean up it would have to be replaced anyway but worth a try.

:BEER Cheers on that! I've found a place nearby that actually has DeOxit D5 so I'll give it a try.

Huh? A replacement pot costs less than five bucks, and takes 15 minutes (tops) to replace. If your friend is agreeable, get it done and repay his favor.

It has push/pull pots for coil tapping that aren't made anymore, apparently. Once again this is according to my local repair guy.

DPDT pots are available all over the place. Look to see if it has 6 lugs on the switch.

Thanks again for all the advice, guys! Much appreciated. :BEER
The store was out of DeOxit but they recommended Fernandes contact reinforcer in its stead. I tried it out but it doesn't seem to have completely eradicated the scratchiness.
The pot does indeed have 6 lugs but after reading the other thread on push-pull pots, I'm a little wary of trying to replace them.
