Going to call Dave tomorrow for some suggestions, but I wanted to post this now in case anyone has experienced this before or has any ideas on how to solve the problem...
I have a Avatar "Vintage" 4x12 cab and its making this horrible WHOMP-WHOMP noise that completely overtakes the sound. Sounds just fine on the D-G-B-E strings, but if I palm mute any lower notes on the bottom two strings the sound emerges. This cab used to perform perfectly, so I don't know what happened. Only had it for the last two or three months. Only moved a couple of times, it's basically just remained stationary in my house. Loaded with Greenbacks, so the power handling is a low 100 watts, but I never used a head more than 60 watts with it and never even cranked that amp.
I don't have a 1/4 jack out for my living room CD player to pug into the cab, so I took off the back panel and ran some speaker wire from the CD player to the lugs on the speaker input jack of the cab. CRANKED the CD player playing "The Thing That Should Not Be" by Metallica (lots of low register palm muting in that song) and the sound was gone. Plugged in my amp to the cab (back panel of cab is still off) with the same setup and volume settings as before and the terrible sound was completely gone. Put the back panel back on and the sound came back. At this point, I've assumed this is a vibration issue. Just to test things out, I even took out the two recessed handles on the side (to port the cab) and the vibration was still there. I figure this is an issue with the back panel and/or the beam extending front-to-back from the center of the speaker baffle.
My question is: What can I do about it?
(sorry for the long post)
