This is my first post. I've lurked for a while, but just signed up.

I'm assembling a tele style guitar with a body and neck I got off the bay. The body has an f-hole. The neck is all maple. I plan on using the GFS lil puncher pickups, but don't know which of the 3 pairs to use. I've narrowed it down to the "modern vintage"

or "hot lead".

I have a tele already, so I don't need the twang. I prefer more of a crunchy tone, as I like 80's rock (I'm kind of dating myself here).

If anyone has experience with either or both, I'd love to hear from you. I've seen people mention them, but only by the lil puncher name, not which version they used.

Thanks for the great info I've been able to pick up here so far.

I had the "Cool Vintage" set. They are great rock pickups but lousy country pickups. Since I play country they had to go, I went with a set of GFS Fatbody pickups and they are spectacular.

I recommend the 10K Modern Vintage. I have a pair, and I think they sound great, for any money. I A/B them with a Harmonic Design S-90 and a Voodoo Fat 60s, and they absolutely hold their own. Wire them up with 500K pots and a 22 cap.

If you have a vintage three-saddle bridge, you have to get the XLs. Apparently the non-XLs aren't long enough and don't pick up the E strings!

The Modern Vintage is great and is in my tele's. You'll get the twang and the 80's rock sound with it... No problems there.

Thanks for the comments. Good to hear about needing the XLs, as I plan on using a 3 saddle bridge.

Sounds like I need the modern vintage.

I put a set of Modern Vintage pickups in my semihollow ASAT Classic. The bridge pickup is great - I get a really nice sound for blues/rock. Not really getting the twang with it, but that's not what I was looking for. The neck pickup was a little too dark for me, so I returned it and use the GL small MFD pickup. IMO it's a pretty killer combination.
