any recommended channel switchers for CAE 3+ preamp?

Of what else can you use? The manual and CAE site says: Switching logic that interfaces to all popular switching controllers

I was hoping that there was a cheap footswitch like a $30 Crate or something.

As this isn't part of my main set-up I probably use a MIDI mouse or Rocktron Xchange. I guessing they should be fine but no phantom power makes a bit of a hassle.
