I'm looking for a cheap-ish (under $100 ... ok, so that's not "ish" it's CHEAP) DI box for bass. Don't need effects. My purpose is just to drag my bass to local acoustic open mics and add some bottom end to other players' performances. The only tone I need is clean bottom end. I'll likely run from the DI to the house sound system.
Samson makes a real cheapie called the S-Direct Plus (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SDirectPlus/) ... and it's tempting (not risking much). Anyone have experience with these, or can recommend others? Thanks.

The couple that are the most popular are the SansAmp Bass DI, and the MXR M-80 Bass D.I.. Of the two, the SansAmp is more widely used. Either one would probably be perfect for what you are describing, but they are both over you budget. If you watched, you could probably find the M-80 used for under $100. The SansAmp would be more like $150.

Whirlwind Director: $50 or less used on ebay all the time. Reliable workhouse DI. Will also clean windows, shine shoes and organize your record collection. :)

If it will iron my shirts and darn my socks I'd be completely sold! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks. I've looked at both, but they do more than I want or need. I'm a guitarist who can hold down a bass line in an acoustic ensemble, but not really a bass player anymore (I played bass only back in the early 70's) so the extra stuff would be unused by me.

Look for a Groove Tubes Passive DI. They can be had on ebay for around $25.
