View Full Version : Question about Fender Bass Cases

I know very very little about basses. The bassist for the band I am playing in in has a P-Bass and for some reason he never purchased a case for it. It has definitely gotten beat-up, but I am worried that something bad will happen and it might get wrecked. So I am looking for a bass case for him, and I was wondering.
"Would a bass that is form fitted for a jazz bass also fit a p bass?"
I am just looking to pick up a used case so I don't care about aesthetics, I would just like for it to be protected.
Thanks!

Get a decent gig bag. Nobody carries those big ol' rectangular hsc's any more.

I'm assuming that's a joke.
You should be able to pick up a decent SKB case (or similar) that will fit. Just take the bass to the store with you.

I carry those big ol' rectangular cases- they protect my instruments.
The Jazz and Precision have different body styles. If the case is form fitted to a Jazz it will not fit a P.

There are plenty of cases for P basses out there. Also, the Musicman Stingray case is an excellent fit.

It is true that a case form fitted to a Jazz will not fit a Precision, but the vast vast majority of bass cases (including the official Fender cases and the SKB bass cases) will fit both.

I do as well, for my #1 at least (only have gig bags for a couple of basses).

Check Ebay. There are usually very serviceable ones there. The factory tolex cases actually don't hold the instrument very well - I use a flannel baby blanket around my '63 P in its factory case.
A molded J case will NOT fit a P. A generic case usually fits both - I have a plastic TKL case that fits both my J and P, and it provides much better protection than the factory case. It's well worth spending the money. But if it's not your bass, I wouldn't worry much about it.
For my own basses - I don't know about the rest of you, but it's a rare event when one of my basses leaves the house and it's NOT in a hard case. I regard use of a hard case (if I have one that fits) as an absolute, iron-clad requirement when gigging. :JAM
