View Full Version : Hello from NJ
I've been here for a while now and have not taken a moment to introduce myself. My name is Mike Neer and I'm a Guitarist and Steel Guitarist (lap steel, console, a little pedal, National resos). I've been making noise for a long time and from 2004-2006 had primarily made my living playing acoustic music, but now that's changed and I'm back to playing amplified instruments, although I still love to beat up on my old archtops and my Michael Dunn Selmer-style. Maybe I met some of you at the NY Amp Show in May, where I demo'ed some stuff for Loni Spector (I'll be there again next May).
Anyway, I like talking gear and even buying and selling it, but very often come to the conclusion that most of what I like comes from the player. I've been lucky to have many fine guitars and amps in my hands and I have a very good sense of what I like, but am always ready to be surprised. Case in point: a friend stops by with a SS Fender Princeton 65 that he found in the trash. He gave it to me, knowing that I can fix stuff, but the amp worked fine; in fact, I changed the speaker to a Celestion G12M-70 and now have myself a great sounding little amp for some of my smaller jazz gigs and steel gigs in some of NY's smaller venues, although it is loud as hell (be advised: only the 1st channel, or normal channel is decent--the lead channel is one of the worst ever). But it just goes to show, you never know and sometimes we can get way bogged down by gear stuff....(did I just break a GP law?)
So, it's nice meeting you in advance.
Mike

Yo from Trenton!
Thanks, guys. I'm in Middlesex; born and raised in Kearny.
Oh, thanks for watching the vids. I was playing Hawaiian steel guitar for a while. Not really doing that now, but I'm teaching some workshops and things in that style. My steel playing comes from all different angles, but I'm primarily a guitarist and vocalist.
Have a really cool project in talks right now and I'm excited about it, but I'm super-excited about a Bigsby D-8 replica steel guitar coming from Todd Clinesmith any day now: http://www.clinesmithinstruments.com/clinesmith/steelguitars.html
One thing I do know, it's good to make friends wherever you go. Thanks for the welcome.

Greetings from Wall Township, Exit 100B
I have a steady Tuesday night residency at a club in Edison, NJ with my friend Walt Stacey. We generally play as an acoustic duo, sometimes I'll break out my lap steel, but it's kind of anything goes. I welcome anyone to come on down with their guitar and sit in on a few numbers. We try to keep it acoustic, though.
Would love to have the opportunity to meet with some of you.
It's an early gig (7-11pm) at Seasons on Rt. 27 in Edison, directly across from Lou Rose Music (home of my amp tech, Dennis Kager) and about half a mile down from Sam Ash.

Welcome aboard Mike!
Changed my nick from ionahoopii to Neer, BTW.
Offer still stands--anyone is invited on down to my Tuesday night gig in Edison to sit in on a few. Keep in mind, it's an acoustic setting. If interested in details, send me a pm.
