It might be fun to augment the Champ at my house with something a bit more British. Tell me about the sound quality of these amps. Strengths? Weaknesses? Is the Orange 1x12 the cabinet pairing of choice?

Amazing fat el84 tone at low volumes if needed.

Get it modded by Jule (www.juleamps.com (http://www.juleamps.com)) he did mine and it came out amazing! For $125 you can't go wrong.

I have other amps that kick its butt; however, they cost a helluva lot more. Really excellent value. Totally legit old-school Brit grind without tinnitus or chiropractic issues. And without breaking the bank.

A must have amp for any self-respecting rocker.

Instant (classic)rock tones at reasonable volume.

Strengths: price, size, weight, simplicity, no crap tones available.

Weaknesses: none.

If you can't afford a Jule Amp, then by all means allow him to work his magic
on your TT.

To get more of a Vox AC15 tone, upgrade the speaker to a Weber Blue Dog
or Celestion Blue once budget permits.

What does Jule know about this circuit that Orange doesn't? What are the advertised improvements? I read his site, but the comments were vague and he didn't talk about the parts of the circuit that are modified.

Strengths:
Great chimey clean tone (not tons of headroom, but perfect for home playing) that can also be warm and inviting. Awesome overdrive sounds with a large range. That is, it can do the slight overdrive sounds, where the guitar is touch responsive, and just on the edge of breakup, all the way to screaming sustaining drive.

Weaknesses:
It can sound a bit buzz-saw in certain cases, although this is usually cured by turning to a brighter pickup on the guitar or adjusting the tone control. The fact that it is a single channel amp, while not a weakness per se, but this would limit the amp in situations where a switch is needed. It does, however, do pretty good at going from cleanish to dirt just by change your pick attack.

All-in-all, I love this amp. I have a Vox V12BN, which has "VOX custom GSH12-30, " which are Wharfdale speaker's take on Celestion G12H. It seems to match quite well, as I find the tone quite good. I think this cabinet is somewhat under-rated, as I got mine for under $200. I have played it through a few other cabs, and it also sound good, but the Vox cab just sounds like "home."

I love the Tiny Terror for home playing!!

I should add that this is not a jazz amp, even for home (unless you want acid jazz a la Mahavishnu Orchestra at low volume). It does rock (think Beatles, et al.), grungy blues-like stuff (think Hendrix, et al.), and heavier stuff (AC/DC, etc.) really well.

Jule knows a lot. I asked him what longevity issues his mod addresses and this was his reply:

The longevity issues are things that I have spoken to the West CoastOrange Representative about.Biggest issue is poor solder work particularly on all four tube sockets. Iresolder them completely. Also make sure the rest of the board iscorrectly soldered. There is also a rather serious issue caused by a verysimple oversight on the part of Orange. To me it is serious because itintroduces strange unpredictable noises and variable tone. I get rid ofall the noise, and make the tone settings consistent by simply taking offall three potentiometers and using a heavy wire brush on a drill to removethe over-spray paint beneath them. They are supposed to be grounded on thechassis, but the over-spray paint defeats that grounding. Then I get ridof the rather cheap push-on terminals and solder those wires directly tothe PCB.There are other smaller things I look for, but those are the biggest valueitems. They do make a difference. And that's just one aspect that Jule changes.

Don't own one ... or an Orange cab ... but I've read a few threads on the Orange forum that speak highly of the Orange 2x12 cab. Also, here's a reasonably good quality clip featuring a TT:

The Jule Brenda K is one of the finer recording amps available.

He knows his stuff.

With all respect to Jule the youtube vid of the julemod didn`t convince me at all. He has to come up with something better than that.

You can't be serious. Despite it being a youtube vid, it's pretty clear that the tone improves after the mod. What do you want- a HD video? :NUTS
