I'm going to be testing out 2-3 different speaker cables....would it be ok to unplug the head to switch cables real quick (2-3 sec. max), or should I put the amp on standby everytime single time, going back-n-forth-back-n-forth?

I am not a tech but i would say a couple of seconds is okay, i usually just turn the volume to zero so there's not too much signal going through the OT.

Put the amp on standby.

While rare, there are some amps which are unstable with no load, and even a few seconds of oscillation at full power and a single frequency - which is what will happen, and possibly outside the audio range - could stress the tubes and OT severely.

If you don't know for certain that your amp is stable or has a switch in the speaker jack to make it so (which some do, but certainly not all), take the extra second to flip the standby.

+2 on standby, have heard quite a few people say standby is best, not the kind of thing to wing it and see if they right or not me thinks. play it safe. wont take that much longer.
