Anyone know anything about these? I'm interested in opinions, cuz there's one up on Fee-Bay that's piqued my curiosity.

I'm especially interested in hearing from Supro owners--I've got a Trojan & corsica from a similar era & I love both, but am interested if anyone out there has played a Big Star. Thanks folks!

It is an awesome amp. I have had several Supros, 2, 16Ts, a Tremo Verb, a Thunderbolt a Big Star. None of the others, including the Thunderbole compare to the Big Star. It is the creamiest sounding amp on the planet. It doesn't have a lot of gain but with seriously good pedals it turns into a monster. I sold mine to Blues Saraceno, who had three of them at one time. He still has one and sold the one he bought from me on eBay last year for a little over $2K. The tremolo is good and but the reverb is very limited. It has two great old Jensen Ceramics. I wish I had never sold it.

I think I have that same amp, but it's a head only, not a combo.
It's called a Sportsman, and is pretty much as you describe the Big Star.
Same thing?
Might want to keep an eye out for the Sportsman head if it is the same thing. Probably find one cheaper than 2K at least.
I dont recall what I paid for mine, it was awhile ago, two hundred bucks maybe. . .

peace sk

I don't know anything about the Sportsman. I can tell you that the Big Star had two main channels, each with a treble and regular input and a volume and tone knob. it also had a tremolo section with speed and intensity and a reverb section with its pot. It had a foot switch and was laid out similarly to a Thunderbolt in that the preamp was above under the controls and the power amp was separate and in the bottom of the cab with the reverb. I really liked the Thunderbolt but this amp was much thicker and creamier. I don't know if just the switch from the Jensen 15's to a pair of 12s, the reverb and tremolo accounted for all the difference in sound but as I remember, the power sections were the same. The earlier versions of both amps used a pair of 6L6's and a tube rectifier. Later versions of both did not have the rectifier tube. The model number of the earlier Big Star that I had was 56451 TR. They looked like a giant 16T, if you know what those look like.

Supro had another model that was a half step up from the Big Star. I think it was laid out the same but had a real tremolo and it had a solid, refrigerator handle looking handle on top. I would love to know how those things sound but I have never run across one.

That is not exactly the same amp. The earlier, model; 56451 TR had the preamp separated from the power amp and used a tube rectifier. I have never heard the newer version so I can't comment on how it sounds. I had a Supro Corsica from the same series as this newer Big Star and it was a good amp. This newer Big Star has a long metal reverb tank that should sound better that the cardboard box version from the early version.

Either the head or the 2x12 combo. I would love to have the blueish green style they came out with in the mid-60's.

Does anyone know where I could track one down and possibly find one for sell?

Does any of the owners on here ever consider selling? I'd be interested.
