i started this project with frank pine of less tall guitars (http://www.lesstallguitars.com/), last november. the idea? i wanted a soprano burst that would be capable of playing violin literature (and parts) @ pitch. i've been after this guitar since seeing les on the cover of guitar world with his baby gold top (which he used live for his double speed parts).

frank has exceeded my wildest expectations with his work. as soon as steve takes care of use on the pigtails end, it's off to finishing.

If Frank Pine decides to go with a run of those, I'd have to give it serious thought...although I've already enrolled in the octave club with a candy-apple-red Robin and two Hammertone Octave XIIs.

That's probably the most outrageous guitar of 2008, and it's only January!

As Eric Cartman would say: Kick-ass.

Who's going to do the finish work? Dave Johnson (who I recall did the scale model Less Talls)?

I once had a Les Paul five string electric Mandolin. Made by Bacorn. It was a wonderful little mandolin. Unfortunately, I sold it in a fit of GAS. I am having a L5 Octave Mandolin being built now, but it will take another year to finish. The mandolin was a blast to play!

OK back to the regularly scheduled programming.

Hi guys, thanks for all the nice comments! And thanks Matte for starting this thread. Half the fun of building these small guitars is seeing and hearing the reaction from people after they've seen them.

And now I'll try and answer some of the questions that Matte hasn't already responded to...

I wondered about that too. That first board had some great figuring. Why the scrap?

In any case, great axe Matte!

Don't worry about that board. It will be put to good use, I'm sure. I already have two more octave guitars in the works that will need fingerboards.

Very cool!

I have a Mason and Hamlin Grand too! Great pianos!

Yes, I agree. This one dates to around 1920, and was restored about ten years ago. When I bought it, I tried out a bunch of high end pianos at the same time, and the combination of action and sound of this one was superior to any of the others. Now, if only I knew how to play the darned thing!

Just plain too cool! What will the string gauges be?

The string gauge is "Ultra Light" .008 - .038.

That's probably the most outrageous guitar of 2008, and it's only January!

As Eric Cartman would say: Kick-ass.

Who's going to do the finish work? Dave Johnson (who I recall did the scale model Less Talls)?

Thanks Blauserk! I'm doing some experimenting with the whole finishing thing right now, and hope to finish it myself. But I won't tackle it until and unless I'm confident I can do a good job. I may get Dave involved if, at any point, I feel like I'm over my head.

...and now for another photo:

http://images.lilypix.com/albums/userpics/10152/Octave_Guitar_Strung006_1200.jpg

And for those interested, here is the magazine cover showing Les Paul with his two octave guitars. These were a partial inspiration for this project. But I wanted to take the design a little further. I wanted my guitars' bodies to look more like a real Les Paul...I never was that crazy about the shape of these:

A question for Frank: you noted that you like the regular Les Paul shape better than that of Les's octave guitars, but would you ever consider building one (or more) like the originals?

Just asking...I like goldtops!

I would think it might be hard to fret this guitar above the 12th fret(cramped spacing) Kind of like a mandolin. Maybe , you just turn your fingers sideways to accomodate that problem. Anyway, there`s no money above the 3rd fret!

I like goldtops too, but quite frankly, I don't like the shape of Les Paul's original octave guitars at all. So I'd consider doing a goldtop, but it would be the "normal" Les Paul shape.

LOL!

Yes, I agree that the frets above the 12th fret are quite cramped. Fortunately, I just build 'em; I'll let others worry about how to play 'em!

not a problem for me. i had a robin octave guitar (15" scale length) and had no problem playing the entire range of the instrument. i also had a 36 fret 7 string gibson explorer with a 26 & 5/8 scale length, the upper registers lend themselves to extremely wide intervallic lines.

Actually, this one's bigger. The "original" Less Talls are exactly half scale in every detail including all the hardware...which is what made those so challenging. Even the neck is half scale, which means it's just a little over an inch at it's widest point...much too narrow to realistically play.

This octave guitar has a 3/4 scale body, the neck width is the same as a normal Les Paul, but the fret scale is a short 14 3/4 inches. And the beauty of this one (for me, at least) is that it uses all full size, off-the-shelf hardware.

So, are those half-size Les Pauls even playable in any sense? Can you put them in open tuning and do bar chords/slide?

These guitars were originally intended to be semi-playable works of art. Everything about the guitar was made precisely to scale including the fret scale, in case I wanted to be able to play it, and have it be in tune. However, after spending months making these things, quite honestly, I was scared to death when it came time to putting the strings on and starting to tune it. The neck is so small on these things, and the strings create such intense pressure, that I was afraid I might snap the neck. And yes, there's a truss rod in there, but it's a tiny little thing...and truss rods don't seem to be able to keep necks on full size Les Pauls from snapping when they want to, so I had no level of comfort that it would help with this little neck! I suppose I could tune it down an octave to relieve some of the pressure on the neck, but with the thin strings on it, I don't think it would sound too good.

Thanks, mykljpao...and yes, in my original drawings of the guitar I actually had two mini HBs, so as to make it look more like its Les Paul big brothers. Then Matte told me he only needed one pickup, so I changed directions. I'm sure I'll do the mini HBs sometime soon.

And speaking of the finished product, I had some extra non-productive time today since the kids were both home sick from school, so I was playing around with Photoshop a bit. Here were the results (the color is just a starting point):

I also love the presence of mineral streak in all the guitars, does that super mini guitar in the previous pictures actually work?

Amazing stuff!

Thanks again, BP. Not to derail this thread too far, but if you like mineral streaks, check out my '07 R0:

Regarding the mini guitars, they're built in every detail to be just like their big brothers, only in precise half scale. The two exceptions are: 1) I couldn't make a fully functional tuner just like the originals, so I had to compromise...the guitar is fully tunable, but not the traditional way even though they look like they are; and 2) I never got around to building a functional pickup for the guitars. Since the guitars are too small to really play anyway (with a 1 inch neck width), I didn't really feel the need to go the extra mile...but I will some day. Other than that, you can play it acoustically, and all the other electronics are in there. BTW, here's a better shot of the two completed minis:

Just a quick update. I'm finally getting around to finishing these octave guitars, after waiting out the harsh New England winter weather. I tackled the grain filler yesterday on one of them, and here are a couple of pics showing some of yesterday's progress:

Today, while waiting for the grain filler to dry, I sprayed the headstock. Here's what it looks like so far:

Today I tackled the color coats on the top of my "practice" guitar. I'm just a beginner at this finishing stuff; up until now, Dave Johnson has been finishing my little guitars for me. And this being my first try, it didn't come out quite like I planned (and practiced). The color ended up being somewhere between a dark iced tea, and a darkburst...again, not quite what I had wanted, but I guess I'm happy with how it turned out anyway.

Here are a couple of photos of the top so far. I'll start with the clear coats tomorrow. And if I don't like the finished product, I'll just strip it and start again!

ever since i heard John Abercrombie's "Characters" album (waaaaaay back in the late 70's i guess) where he overdubs with a Fender electric mandolin i was intrigued by that sound and concept.... never heard that sound again so let's hear some tunage when you can get around to it ! great idea in all and i will have to get my (korean ?) mini Strat in playing condition again....

Just a quick update...It was four weeks ago yesterday that I applied the final coats of clear, so I marked the occasion by spending part of the day final sanding and buffing the guitar by hand. In spite of the fact that the guitar was done entirely with rattle cans, it shined up quite nicely. I've decided to do the headstock over again, because I wasn't satisfied with the outcome. I made the mistake with the very last clear coat (four weeks ago) of putting it on too heavy, and to my surprise, it melted the black paint partly over the MOP logo. I didn't expect that to happen considering I had at least eight or nine coats underneath that coat, but now I've learned my lesson (I hope).

Anyway, here's one photo showing the results from yesterday's work:

Regarding qestions about offering these things for sale, I hope to get to that point soon. I'm looking at ways of ramping up production of them to more than one or two at a time. I'll keep you posted.
