...wear your strap high, frets 1-5 don't feel 6 feet to the left of you. All I can think of is possibly a Giffin std (custom made w/o the tummy cut).

Know of anything else???

EDIT: strap button should be somewhere close to being on the same plane as the 13th fret, give or take a fret.

Giffin's do look fantastic, and they are on my wishlist for a custom order guitar if I ever get the chance.

This has been on my mind lately, as I'm a small guy (5'4") and have been thinking a lot about scale length and position of the neck relative to my "center".

They don't qualify as small luthier, but I find PRSi really fit the bill. Get's the tone I'm shooting for, and places the guitar in the right place for me. Something to consider...

The extended upper bout on Terry McInturff's singlecuts eliviates a lot of that feeling. No issue on his doublecuts either.

yeah I've thought about the PRS Mccarty & Modern Eagle, as they are a bit better in the reagrd I'm talking of. But I guess I'm leaning towards the 24 3/4 scale, and no tummycut on the back.

For a guitar to sound even remotely like a LP there has to be some mass under the fretboard from at least the 15th-16th fret back. These double cut guitars just do not do it.

Here is my take on a guitar to capture the LP type tone, fret access, 13th fret strap pin, and balance point at the waist for good playing position.

Beautiful looking instruments. I only wish his scale lengths and prices were a bit smaller.

His Carolina is up there (still less than a lot of the real popular booteek LP-types), but his other guitars can still be had at very reasonable prices if you ordered new - and I'm assuming you would since you want the Gibson scale length (you can order any model with either his 25 1/8" or the Gibson scale length now). I have no issue adjusting between the shorter scale and Terry's, and his doublecuts can be a downright bargain on the used market.

These are super rare and hard get ahold of, but the 84 Ovation Ultra GP would be my choice. I think it's the best looking body style I've ever seen, and the only Ovation I'd be caught playing. I got lucky enough to snag a black one a couple years ago.

I've been thinking about this exact issue a lot, and although it is not a small-builder thing at all, the Michael Kelly Valor seems to have the goods. Neck set well into the body, so the neck/body contact area is significant. Overall length is very compact. The ones I've played (although briefly) felt a lot like my Hamer Archtop Studio, except no tendency to neck-dive and less access to the upper frets.

Thanks! I'd say a solid body Duke is roughly around 7-8k depending on specs. I'd be happy to give you a more specific quote if you drop me e-mail. Cliff (DAG) has also some of my guitars on his site that might be of interest to you.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned the PRS McCarty yet. They're excellent Les Paul-ish type guitars, and the strap button comes right in on the 14th fret. These are all different McCarty models (Archtop, '94 McCarty, Modern Eagle, and McCarty Soapbar):

Oh I thought it was simply a simple question!

No nothing special except its a Vintage Gibson 335. That kinda special if you know what I mean. He said it was his for more then forty years . The Guitar was caked in sweat and crud by the end of the show the Chief is real funky. He had his Mojo working , I got so close some of it got on me too.

Serious if he makes the Blues Circuit near you get in to see him real deal
