I took your advice and jumpered my crappy Crate practice amp to the speaker in my surprisingly nice Crate V-16, and it sounded good. The problem is in the crappy Crate practice amp speaker. So I need to buy a new one, but I don't want to overspend. The current one is 10", 4 Ohms and rated at >20 watts. Can you recommend something cheap and decent? Does it have to be 4 ohms? What would happen if I went to 8?

If your crate practice amp is a SS which I am guessing it is then if it has a 4 in it now using a 8 will cut the volume down close to a half of what it is with the 4. I know I had a crate and the speaker went and it was a 4 and I put a 8 in it and the volume was cut in about half. That crate was a 60 watter. I would check with your local music store sometimes they gut speakers out of bad SS amps rather then fixing them and you may get a decent speaker cheap. I buy them at the local music store here for usually 20 bucks a speaker unless it is some thing high price.

gotcha -- that makes sense. one more question: what's the ideal wattage rating for the speaker? the amp's spec book says >20. what is the sonic difference between a 30w and a 50w?

Can't help ya with that I use what ever speakers I can find that are musical speakers and if they sound good to me great if not I trade them off for something that may sound better. I like Eminence speakers and I even have some old Utahs here that sound good from the 60's. Some may hear things in speakers I cannot LOL if it sounds good to me I use it but I cannot say from brand to brand what is better and what is not as I have not tried a lot of brands like some folks have looking for the ultimate speaker.
