Resonator pickups:
Got a favorite? Tried one that just didn't do it?

Had some troubles with biscuit pu's with output loss on the high and low E's. Just got a McIntyre and dig it a lot. But I'm working on designing one with David Gage in New York. He makes bass pickups, but I had him do one for an archtop acoustic that is just amazing. It's the same setup as a Fishman, but the sound is almost like a mic.

The Lace resonator pickup is EXACTLY the National pickup that National uses when you factory order a pickup. I use them in my Nationals and I love them. Installation is a snap too.

Are we talking biscuit, tricone, or spider here? Totally different worlds in terms of pickups in my experience.

Yeah, these do work great, but they are magnetic pickups that amplify string vibrations. That doesn't work for everyone. I like the ones that get a little closer to the acoustic sound. The Lace sounds very electric.

Very true. I'm referring to single cones with a biscuit. Mine's made by Amistar. http://www.amistar.cz/instr/doug_wamble.html

the fishman one that's basically a little washer with a wire coming of of it works pretty well as a "mic-like" pickup, i.e., pretty accurate, if a bit feedback sensitive. it attaches to the same central bolt that holds the whole cone assembly together (a biscuit cone dobro hula blues in my case). i've thought about combining it with some sort of string-sensing pickup, either a saddle piezo or a magnetic pickup, and blending them with a baggs imix preamp.

Another vote for the National/Lace pickup. I heard they weren't exactly the same but I would guess it makes sense they are. It's a great pickup none the less and I listened to everything I could get my hands on before buying this one. One of the few reso pickups you can play at band volumes, and remarkably really keeps the reso character.

+1 on the National/LAce.

I really like the one I got for my tricone.

I believe Highlander makes pups for resonators.

Nice looking guitar!

Biscuit at the moment. This is my first foray in resophonic territory so I bought a cheapy.

Cool, that one looks easy to install and use and I know a local who gets a good sound with one.

I've looked at the McIntyre, haven't heard one yet.

Really diggin the Lace/National on my Delphi - it's just microphonic enough to pick up all those cool overtones resos are famous for. Thinking of getting one for my Selmer-style archtop.

Expensive, tho.. I've got guitars that cost less.

What I've done with my old el-cheapo Regal RI (woodbody, spiderbridge) is glue the piezo crystal from a RadioShack door buzzer to the cone. Surprisingly good sounding for a buck ninety eight!

Very weak output, but I run it thru' a BOSS GE-7 EQ pedal to boost the signal & roll off some highs..
