I open this thread to introduce yourself amplifiers Hook, created and assembled by hand in the Netherlands by Leendert Haaksma.

(Sorry for my bad English writing, I am french. Thanks)

Initially I must have: Divided by 13 RSA23, FTR37, RSA31 and JRT9/15
The RSA31 amp was the least interested me because Hook was the same thing better, so I replaced the RSA31 by the Hook Captain 34.

*More info about Hook Amps:

Hook, it is simply the story of a professional guitarist of the Netherlands ' Leendert Haaksma' who was unable to find a multi-channel amp very versatile and possessing the best vintage and modern sounds that exist on the market and that would have a lot of sensitivity, versatility & very dynamic!
Also, this player (he plays all musical styles) played on Marshall Plexi, and Blackface Fender Tweed, Bogner XTC and Dumble ODS, as well as other amps for several years on a professional level.

Simultaneously he developed his amp for a decade of research in the offering to test his friends professional guitarists.
Their opinions have been very valuable in his research.
After 10 long years he released the head Captain equipped with 6L6 power valve which was already a great success and very recently it had launched a very small production of new amps that assembles itself when the time are called Captain Hook 34.
They are equipped with EL34 and this amp is very successful! (The EL34 is even better than the 6L6 and the sounds are even cleaner and more accurate.)
Hook amps received all the congratulations and recognitions in Germany and the USA where she began to be exported (always in very small quantities), the latest Frankfurt fairs and other NAMM has been a major success for Hook!
The director of Gibson Germany fell under the spell from the first listening and has several!

The price in Europe for the head is 2695 Euros (6L6 or EL34 version) without footswitch and without color (for a complete set with cabinet, count between 3200 and 3500 Euros in Europe with all taxes)

->Approximately 5500 US Dollars for a Hook complete set (extra charge for Shipping and Taxes)

The head Hook Captain and Captain 34 is used by many artists to the Netherlands and Germany, among others, by its designer Leendert Haaksma participating in Pinkpop Festival and numerous sessions in stage and studio recording.

The technical design is very similar to a Bogner XTC, a Soldano SLO, a Mad Professor CS40, or a CAA OD100, but with 3 channels, cut tone, click channel, Eq, Bright, Fx Loop, Dynamic Response , Booster on each channels, Midi Footswitch 5 Knobs with leds...

The head Captain 34 EL34 version is very similar to a Mad Professor CS40, the sounds are very similar, but it has its own personality and is cheaper than at home Mad Professor.

The sound is simply fabulous ... No kidding, I have already heard a Dumble original several times, the sound is really clear and very close to her also saturated, the amp can be used both in very low volume, as strong volume (rare thing for a Valve amps) it is super versatile, it can sound Two-Rock/Dumble in his clear, Fender Tweed / Blackface, Vox AC30, Marshall Plexi, and may even have sounds very modern.
It's very good for Stage or Studio Recording! Because very strong and versatile!

This amplifier fully respects the sound of guitars and the pickups styles.
This is an amp to buy their eyes closed if you like the sound SRV, Hendrix and sounds a little more modern!
It's really the same league as Mad Professor and Soldano and it is cheaper in Europe that Soldano, Mad Professor and Two-Rock.

If you are looking for Dumble style sounds just add a pedal Fuchs Plush with Valve or a similar pedal and turning a blind eye it will be difficult to know if you play on a true or a false Dumble Overdrive Special...
It's incredible!!!!!

To summarize, Hook it is 100% vintage sounds but with all the advantages of Modern (loop effects mixable, Footswitch to trigger Boost, 3 channels, FX loop mix, Presence control etc ...) And the sound ... incredible!
For a little less than a Two-Rock was the same thing in more comprehensive and versatile, it really deserves to be known!
If you like Divided by 13, Bogner, Mad Professor, Fuchs, Matchless, Soldano and Two Rock you like amps Hook!

All colors can be custom, even the color of each knobs!

All components are high-end, carbon-based and fully assembled by hand!

To say, even my wife knows that there's not much has managed to hear a clear difference in sound colour compared to Divided by 13 she has grown accustomed to hearing ... Yet she did not particularly subtle ear or ear for music, but also in the early second was conquered by the sound of this wonder!

*Features Technical Specifications Hook Captain EL34:

100W hand built all tube guitar amplifier: (or 80W in 6L6 version)

· 3 Channels (with boost, EQ and Click Channel + Presence Control)
· Stainless steel chassis
· Military grade components
· Point-to-point wiring
· Mallory 150 series / Sprague Orange Drops capacitors
· Channels and boost are all switchable with a simple latching footswitch
· A switchable tube buffered series effects loop along with a return level control (power section master volume) to allow interfacing with a wide variety of effects devices. The individual channel master level controls act as effects send levels and the return level control then acts as an overall master volume when the loop is used. The effects send jack is always active and is useful as a low impedance preamp section line out. When the loop is switched off the effect buffer (send and return) is completely bypassed for maximum transparancy
· 4-EL34 power tubes with a custom designed output transformer Mercury Magnetics (4 / 8 / 16 ohm )
· Regulated DC heaters for the 6 12AX7 preamp tubes provide low noise and increased tube life
· Custom designed overrated power transformer MERCURY Magnetics

-> Herewith some links of demo videos head Hook Captain, unfortunately these are 6L6, I think they sound a bit less than the version EL34, the sound is a little more aggressive and a little less than own EL34 version, but still not bad to give you an idea of its:
(Sorry for the quality WMV which is not to beautify the sound, and at that time there were no Hook Cabinet, they were merely a cabinet Bogner, what is more, since the amps have experienced some improvements, but as it is said to give you an idea of the beast ...)

-> The best samples are those of the creator.
To admit, this one has a big tuft of hair like Craig Ross guitarist Lenny Kravitz!

So my dear friends, hoping you have made a discover or rediscover a new manufacturer of amps that deserves to be known (to me finally, after tastes and colors it does not discuss good ... but personally, given the unanimity on the product of those who have tested or purchased this series of amps it seems to be of good came ...)

I will put you on youtube videos of my test rig so you have an idea of the EL34.
But if you liked the 6L6 you will only find better head CAPTAIN 34.

My amp is the CAPTAIN 34 finish Baby blue / Ivoiry, it is equipped with a Hook Cab (open / closed back) equipped with 2 x 12" G12H Heritage vintage who have never served in the days when they were still manufactured in Britain. These are originals.

Excuse me again for my English, I am French and the French in general do are not very efficient in foreign languages!
We are better at French kiss :)

All the Bests

Nicolas.

->In the past, I have also used other guitars Gibson, PRS and Fender. I also used Marshall amps, Vox, Fender, Mesa Boogie, Fuchs, Badcat, Bogner and Komet.
I also used Digitech effects, Boss effects, Ibanez effects, Maxon effects, MXR Effects, Vox effects, Budda Effects and Electro Harmonix effects.

Excuse me again for this long message and for my bad English writing. I hope that these beautiful pictures you enjoy and that you will appreciate this contribution.

I would soon youtube some tests in video of my equipment. Not very well equipped for making sound and recording, I would with a simple camera. Thank you for your understanding.

See you soon on the forum.

Best regards.

Nicolas from France

-> For more information about Hook amps and hear the 6L6 version on numerous videos (very much) (The 6L6 is little less efficient than the EL34 Version), you can check out the following links (in French) to get an idea

With Hook you can get all the sounds (Plexi, AC30, Matchless, Dumble / Two-Rock and modern style) the head (in EL34) is a mixture of Mad Professor CS40, Bogner XTC, Soldano SLO, Two Rock Custom Reverb Signature.
They are made in very small quantities in the Netherlands. It is a professional guitarist who makes them and the developed during 10 years of research. They are handwired with the best ingredients. head has 3 channels with bright, EQ, Click channel, Tone Cut, Presence and a booster on each channel.
It's really very very good!

Hi, I am glad to be here 'neighbour', I live not far from Lille in the north of France, so it's very close to the Belgium!

I went to pickup my Hook EL34 Last Saturday and Erik Van De Haar (Haar guitars Netherlands) finished assembling components on my hook and test it. However it is a pity i could not meet Leenerd Haaksma!

Picked this one up yesterday!!! I'm absolutely lovin' it! Very well made amazing sounding amp. Very versatile. You won't get real metal sounds from this amp but everything from very clean to very dirty is possible.

http://www.myspace.com/blowbeat if you check out this myspace: it's a band from the maker of the amp, so you can hear it in action, i think this is the 6l6 model but Erik, the distributor, told me that he switched to the EL-34 model, it's even better than the 6l6. Make sure to listen the clips from the album: songs from the crazy planet, thats the one with leendert on it.

And the HOOK amp looks great !

I have mentioned these amps on here before. No one really bit the bait. It's seems there a certian few that get spoke about constantly, but so many that are over looked. Great tones coming out of the Hook amps though, but way the guy plays he could probably make any amp sound good. lol

Lots of good amps come from across the pond, but they are outta reach for most Americans, price-wise...

Here in holland it's the same price as a OD-100 and a few hundred euro's cheaper than a XTC...

I think those clips you posted are still 6l6, ' cause the 34 wasn't released when the concerts were recorder. These clips are about a year, year and a half old.

And the other guitar player uses a Matchless, not a XTC in this clips.

Michael

Ps when i picked my amp up at erik's place they mentioned you, and all the things you bought :)

Hi,

Sorry, I was wrong, this is indeed a Captain 6L6.

However on the Dvd live of Anouk the 2nd guitarist uses many Bogner XTC. (Matchless it can be only at Pinkpop festival? no?)

PS: How do you know that Erik was talking about me? I send him more and more French guitarists ...So it can be anyone not?

It could be that you are right about the XTC, but i've seen that band live a few times and never a XTC, allways a Matchless, but maybe he used one on that concert.
I do know that Leendert used a Ubershall at that concert of the dvd, underneath the stage, for the downtuned 7-string guitar

Because he said that you bought a Hook set, a Divided by 13 and numerous pedals and a les paul, so i connected the dots, but please correct me if i'm wrong!

Those were great tones.

Lots of good amps come from across the pond, but they are outta reach for most Americans, price-wise...

Yes everything is correct, I also purchased an Erik a Divided by 13 FTR37, several Hook and Divided by 13 cabs. he building a telecaster Haar Guitars for me.

It's my favorite shop last few months. I send him a lot of French customers because it has equipment that is found nowhere else and the prices are much cheaper than in France and excellent customer service!

Efisy, as I said in the amp pics thread, AWSOME rig, man!
I have some questions, though, if you don't mind...
I know it's too soon to tell, but if you had to chose, would you take the hook amp or the CS-40? Which amp would you say has better gain sounds? Likewise, which would you say has better cleans? Also, which takes pedals better? Would you say one cleans up better than the other, by use of the guitars volume knob? Lastly, how do the HOOK cabs compare to other cabs you've tried? (i.e. /13) Thanks in advance. I'd like to maybe pick one up in the future.... especially a cab or two- they look killer.

Hi,

The Hook and CS40 are very close. For me I would say that the Hook is at the stage that the Mad Professor is the recording sessions. They are both amplifiers any land but for different purposes!

The 2-amplifiers accept very well any effect pedal in direct front (echo, delay, chorus ...)
The Mad Professor responds better to the knobs of the instrument.
The Mad Professor is more difficult to resolve. We must take a long time to find all the sonic possibilities. It is a little more High-Gain. I find that 2 amps have a clean sound fabulous, but the Mad Professor is more efficient in the sounds clear that the Hook. (Following is a matter of taste)
The Mad Professor is really an amp for recording session.

For resume:
Clean Mad Professor = Dumble / Fender
Clean Hook Captain 34 = Bogner Shiva / Two-Rock Custom Reverb Signature
Crunchs and Dirty Sounds Mad Professor = Plexi / Trainwreck / Bogner XTC
Crunchs and Dirty Sounds Hook Captain 34 = Plexi / Bogner XTC more Vintage.

The 2 amps are very dynamic and responsive. This is similar.

The Hook is cheaper and does a bit the same. It is easier to use thanks to its 3 channels and its options. It has less headroom and can be used at lower volume than the Mad Professor.

The 2 amps are more or less in the same vein, the difference is the price and use that one wishes to do.

Mad Professor CS40 = Recording Studio
Captain Hook 34 = Stage performance

All excellent 2 amps, rare, very well made, very versatile and the same time having their own grain.

It's more usage and the price that will elect in the range of amps.

Maybe it's time to make a list of the 5 gazillions boutique manufactorers :D

Is the amp market beginning to look like the pedal market???? A new manufactor in every other garage, making a clone of something already existing......

Well...anyway....they look nice as many others and from the samples, they sound nice like many others ;)

From the first post:

The head Captain 34 EL34 version is very similar to a Mad Professor CS40, the sounds are very similar, but it has its own personality and is cheaper than at home Mad Professor.

I have already heard a Dumble original several times, the sound is really clear and very close to her also saturated, the amp can be used both in very low volume, as strong volume (rare thing for a Valve amps) it is super versatile, it can sound Two-Rock/Dumble in his clear, Fender Tweed / Blackface, Vox AC30, Marshall Plexi, and may even have sounds very modern.

It's really the same league as Mad Professor and Soldano and it is cheaper in Europe that Soldano, Mad Professor and Two-Rock.

I'm confused....... You think those amps sounds the same???? Or is just that Hook sounds like everything else.....I mean everything? :D

Efisy

No Mad Professor and Hook are not clones like most other
Manufacturers shop. We arrive in obtaining sounds very close to this or
Such amplifier known. But they did their own grain.

These amplifiers are extremely versatile, so they necessarily cover all
Musical style and resemble many references amplification.

The amps indicated (Divided by 13, Matchless, Soldano, Two Rock etc ...) ring
Differently, but if you like this type of amp, I sincerely believe that you
Hook and like Mad Professor because they are made with the same spirit!

I played Matchless, Marshall, Soldano, Vox, Fender, Divided by 13, Fuchs, Mesa Boogie, Bogner, Bad Cat and Custom Audio Amplifier.

The only head that allowed me to make the most of different musical styles never content to be a mere clone is the OD100 of Custom Audio Amplifier. But it sounds very 'California' and quite 'modern' Hook and the Mad Professor are just the same thing but in addition Vintage, more roots! I prefer!

However, I remain a first fan of Divided by 13 amps, however, I maintain that Divided by 13 amplifiers are more complementary than main amplifiers. Or maybe it takes several D13 amps in his set.

Still confused.... ;)

How would you compare it to the Bogner 101B ?

Efisy
03-22-2008, 04:41 PM
The Hook Captain EL34 Looks like an XTC by design, the settings and options.
But the amp is more roots, more vintage that a Bogner XTC.
I would say that cleans sounds are in the genus Bogner Shiva / Two-Rock (as
Setup) and the sounds dirty / crunch are more typical Plexi.

I never played a HOOK Captain but there are more then a few Pro and semi Pro guitarists in Holland tha own and play one.
The HOOK is vintage/rock orientated and i believe it will not have a Dumble tone in it.

I have always been interested in this amp , but strongly think Hook should add another model that is 40 watts (in my opinion), 80 watts is just totally unusable for club playing, from my perspective/experience. Could Hook make the captain model, but in a 40 watt version? (Not interested in power scaling, or attenuation)
From the clips I heard, the "tonal territories" that my ears recognized were Bogner, Ampeg, Fender Blackface, Voxish cleans, early JTM 45 tones [kt66], the crunch of a Soldano, which is a nice package. But I am not saying it can;t sound like a Dumble or Two Rock, I just didn't hear those tones from the clips.

I would love to have a 3 channel amp that could; carry its own signature sound while capturing aspects of AC-30 cleans to mild overdriven tones, Fender Deluxe Tweed and Deluxe Blackface tones, and a 3rd channel to be derivative of early 60's JTM [coffin logo] tones to modern day hard rock tones[no metal tones] (too many amps too list). There may be many amps that do this, it seems??
HOOKS ... from what I have read and heard can sound like every other amp under the sun (which is great for many reasons) , but outside of that, does it offer its own unique sound/tone? Don;t get me wrong, it looks to be a well engineered amp, and I am in no way slagging the amp, just want to know if it has its own sound/tonal signature?

For example, a amp that I will refer to is Divided by 13's EDT 13/29, American and British inspired sounds all rolled into one amp , as well as, Divided by 13's tone thrown in there as well. I am not saying one is better then the other, I know that the EDT is very versatile , but retains the Div by 13 signature tone in all settings.

I wish these amps (HOOK) were sold in North America as I would love to try one out.(they already are for all I know). Thanks for your time. Richards

Hi,

I googled a little bit to see, who else is using a Hook and I was very happy to find this thread :banana

I am from Germany and I have a 6L6 Version in black ivory tolex + 2*12 overzised Hook cab with Celestion Gold speakers. I can say that it is the best amp for me, I have ever played.

Until now I owned a Caa OD100, Bogner Metropolis, Soldano Decatone and a couple of Marshalls and Mesa Rectifier. Every amp of these had something special and unique and of course they are great amps. But with the Hook I really have the feeling that every channel is a blast!

I do not need to play with different heads anymore, cause everything I need comes out of the Hook. For more sound variation and more heavy stuff I combine the 2nd channel with a Xotic BB-Preamp, that`s it.

BUT: At the beginning I had some problems with the amp that had to be fixed to make me 100% happy. I have to say, that this is one of the first models from 2007.

problem a: the bass response was not tight enough, the sound became too muddy with gain settings more than 10 o'clock in channel 2-3.

problem b: when changing the channels, the switching noise was too loud which was very bad for live jobs.

So, I sent the amp back and they have done a mod on it. It was a better after that, not perfect, but worked also for live situations.

End of 2008 I decided to change the tubes and sent it for a check to Hookamps in NL. Lenny told me, that he could improve the sound and switching noise with a new update and I wanted to try it.

When the amp was then back again, it was the sound like I always wanted it to be. It is just a great Blues/Rock/Hardrock amp with great usefull boost functions.

Now I am thinking of an additional EL34 Version, Let`s see what happens :-)

I just wanted to let you guys know, that you should try a Hook, if you have the chance to.

Write me a PN and I can arrange the contact.

By the way, I have bought my second Hook :), now a EL34 Version. These amps are just amazing
