Well I guess Ive gotten lazy cause I realised Ive got a bunch of old stock 12AX7's to sort out! I was surprised I had so many unsorted but some cool oddballs in there. A german blackplate, pile of my favorite Sylvania short grey plates ,a few unidentified Sonotone 7025's and a sidegetter 12AX7. Man thats a lot of testing to do.....

I'll bet those Sonotones are RCA cleartops.

Check for the "flattened Octagon" with the tube number inside.

Yeah, Im aware of the RCA etchings and they do have it. No flattened sides to the mica though and not cleartops. I do have a few Sonotone cleartops though. Of greater interest is the German marked blackplate and a Hytron long plate with seams on the top.

Of other interest is the variation in "apparent" GE long plates. I say apparent since they all have what are typically construded as GE type etchings and typical plate structure. However the mica(points) are sometimes different as are the plate staple holes and other slight structural differences. Not sure if some of them are actually Raytheons since the have 280 paint codes. Some of this stuff gets more blurry with time I guess.

Not bad!- out of all those tubes only 5 tested bad for emmisions/shorts and 5 tested on the weak(barely good) side. Next comes the v1 in one of my amps. Bob

That's a lot of V1 testing.

On those Sylvania Short Gray plates do you find a difference in the round vs. the square getters?
Or even between yellow, red, and green labels with square getters? I know that's a stretch but sometimes that could mean a different year and less smoothness.
I sold my last JCM 800 with those in it and I think they were a bit smoother than the RFT's in my new JCM 800. I ask because I only see round getters for sale at the moment.

All the sylvania short plates I have are tall square getter type. Dont have any experience with a round getter version-heck wasnt even aware one existed. As for the type I know I think they are definately smoother OD than an RFT. Where have you seen Sylvania short grey plates with a round getter?Bob

I've seen some on ebay with gold lettering but those are 12ax7a or 7025. Also all the Jan or JHS military app Sylvania. I know those are different.
Also a pair in Sylvania black and yellow boxes say 12ax7a and the seller described them as having round getters. I couldn't see the getters in the picture but they are clearly Sylvania short gray plates.

That's what I'm looking for. Have to keep looking. Any of yours have red or green lettering?

Maybe the ones I've been looking at have long plates w/round getters. Hard to tell in some pics.

Some have green lettering, some are also branded as Westinghouse. I rarely go by the branding I look for the short plates combined with the tall getter wire-even if I cant make out the getter itself. Its a giveaway.Bob

Just sold a bunch of those. I think I have some that are labeled Westinghouse "in da house".

Yes that wire stands out in the pictures. Thanks, now they're easier to spot.

I haven't relisted because I haven't sorted out the Westinghouse labeled tubes. If you're seriously interested (at the price on the website) email me and I'll move this closer to the top of my long list of things to do.
