View Full Version : Why No American Strats/Teles In Surf Green?

Why does Fender issue the American Standard Strats/Teles in so few colors. I've always wanted a surf green with a maple neck. Nope, not a standard issue color. WTF. I have a sunburst strat and a natural tele but to me the other colors offered are boring. I'd love surf green. Fender are you listening?

The bottom one.
Both guitars are listed as Surf Green go figure !
Both came from long time Fender Dealers
The bottom came from Garrrett Park Guitars I got it about 9 months ago.

The top one definitely doesn't match surf green from the 50's auto colors that Leo supposedly used. Very strange.

One of them could be called Sea Mist Green
The GPG is a one off.

Ah yes, I seem to remember Sea Mist being a slightly darker green that is closer to turquoise. If I remember correctly it was offered in the late 80's and early 90's.

The Crimson is nice but it's still a fairly common color. I'm bored with red, black, sunburst, vintage white etc. It's just me, I wasn't making a blanket statement for everyone. And yes, it was Sea Foam green and not Sea Mist. I still want SURF green, dammit.

Surf green ROCKS!! One of the best colors for a strat or tele IMO and would be high on my list if they did make that color in the newer ones. Perhaps they will come out with some next year?

The simple reason is this - Fender will put this highly desirable colour in the reissues which gives the reissues a wow factor from the looks department. Helps Fender makes more profit per guitar too ;) There's other colours I love - but sadly they are also only available in RI.... sigh..

I agree with crosse79, some people will buy a guitar just for one factor such as color

You'd think they would want to sell even more American Standards by having extra popular colors and let the custom shop pieces sport fancier hardware, nos pickups, neck shapes etc. If they ever put out an American Strat in surf green I will be first in line to purchase. But they won't just to piss me off.

Fender seems to go in cycles with colors - they had a lot of colors in the late 1980s on the American Standards, then they cut them down in the mid-1990s but released some "special editions" in the custom colors with painted headstocks (colors not normally on the Am Std like burgandy mist, etc.).
It could be that FMIC is going to have some limited editions coming out, or they could just cycle back to having more colors over the next couple of years as the new Am Std line "ages". However, it does seem that some colors like surf green are always reserved for the reissue models, not the modern models.
Fender also is facing a problem that the "Standard" now has upgrades over the "Deluxe" line, like the thinner finish, more vintage bridge, and the nicer case; I'm sure they are going to have to consider a "minor upgrade" to the Deluxe line sometime over the next 12 months - that could include new colors.

They have used surf green or sea foam green in the CS Custom Classics, but you'd have to check the Fender CS site to see the current color options. The Hotrodded American Series Strats were offered in surf pearl, which is surf green with a pearlescent look. I have one of the Texas Special versions in surf pearl with 1-piece maple neck, and it looks very nice indeed.
I think some of the limited edition thin skin Strats come in either surf green or sea foam green, too. Both are very cool colors.

They did make a Highway 1 Special edition in Surf Green. I only saw pictures but it looked right to me. Unfortunately the new price was almost what I paid for this used AV62RI. I think the 80s Strat Plus was also available in either Surf or Seafoam Green. I forget which. The first year they did those thinskins in Surf/Seafoam green but that option disappeared too. Even in the AV series, surf green doesn't show up that often. I wonder if the color just isn't that popular (offered as an alternate to the Fender conspiracy theory).
I dig Strats in most any color but I do like Surf Green. Also, Oly White (with tortoise guard) and I've always dug Fiesta Red and that color seems to be love/hate for many. I am good with the American Series guitars. It is a shame they don't cover more of the "standard" custom colors with that line.
They are doing Oly white on the new Standards. Put a tortoise guard on that puppy and throw in a rosewood fretboard and it'd suit me fine.

Here's one of them that I got back in '96. Even though I've never seen another Strat with the same color or color scheme, I didn't realize it was a 'special edition' until just now.

Just out of curiousity, are these worth any more than other Strats that aren't 'special editions' that came out at the same time? It's an American standard that I bought new for $550. Also, are these the same as the 50th anniversary standard Strats? I don't think so, but I just thought I'd ask. It doesn't say it anywhere on the guitar. All it has that mentions the 50th anniversary is a sticker on the back of the headstock.

Anybody know if these 'special edition' guitars were only 'special edition' colors? Or were there other 'special edition' features? Are the pickups American Standard stock pickups from the time?

Ha ha, I know a guy who keeps saying that he wants a Strat. I recommended the AmDlx V-neck. His reply is "but it doesn't come in white." That's his sole criteria for a Strat.

I'd never buy based on color alone but I know what I'm getting with the American Standard and I just want a larger selection of colors to choose from. PRIMARILY I WANT SURF GREEN, DAMMIT! Fender ARE YOU LISTENING!!!!!!!!
guitarfish

Nah, nobody's listening. Nuthin' but crickets.
When I am looking for a new axe, first I decided WHAT I want, eg Strat, Tele, LP, then I decide color. I might buy something that isn't my first color choice if it's really nice. But I will NOT buy something I can't stand. For me, that rules out black, vintage burst, cherry and so many of the same old same old colors. Fender has this huge color chart on their website, and yet only a tiny fraction of colors available for each model.
Of the new 2008 Strats and Tele's, there's only 1 or 2 that I can even tolerate.

Ocean Turquoise Metallic, maybe? Saw a bunch of those limited edition matching headstock Strats at GC in the 90's, they came in different colors. I remember some red ones, might have been Candy Apple Red. They show up on ebay sometimes.
'62 RI Tele is USA made and in surf green.

Surf & Seafoam green, sonic and daphne blue, coral/shell pink, and the more pale/pastel version of grafitti yellow - best strat colors ever!!!
The new Eric Johnson signature rosewood (fingerboard) strat coming out this summer might be offered in ocean turquoise metallic.
You can always do a Warmoth build. They offer surf green (looks like sea foam in some of their pics, surf in others), sonic blue, shell pink, etc

Yeah, the current line of Fender colours aren't really my style/taste either. And like other posters already noted - Fender goes through a set of colours.
Ugh. I miss LPB! :-(
