View Full Version : COT 50 Gold/Eternity/Fender DRRI questions...Insight Needed!

I'm at a moment of flurry again with OD's! I'm using a COT50 Gold into an Eternity (normal black current model) and I'm finding that the COT50 Gold is very pronounced in the treble range. I'm trying to use it as a rhythm OD stacked into the E. but something isn't happening. I've moved away from the TS-9 for my rhythm OD because of lack of clarity and now, I have amazing clarity but too much brittle top end for a lot of the rhythm OD's work... There is really something quite nice to the COT50 Gold but not sure it's gonna work out...Could be that it's a blackface circuit amp too...
So,
1. Is there anything I'm missing on using these two amazing pedals together?
2. Should I stack them differently to gain better results?
3. If all else fails, what pedal will give me warm, articulate and clear (not muddy on the low strings) tone for rhythm OD work? And that will play extremely well with the Eternity?
I must say, I hate that I'm back here again with OD woes! But as always thanks for the insight!
Mike.

Isn't there a bright cap on that amp? That could be the problem. If the problem goes away with the amp on 7 or 8,then that's the problem.Go to the amp tech section on this forum to find out how fix it.

Very true... it has been clipped though. That DRRI is pretty heavily modded too. Things done to it are as follows:
1. Bright Cap clipped
2. Alltone speaker replacement
3. All NOS Tubes across the board (minus channel one tubes)
4. Run a bluesbreaker extension cab with a Weber Ceramic Blue dog and a Silver Bell.
Anyway, I love the tone of this pedal with my setup minus this treble issue I can't seem to dial out... I have yet to try running the middle knob full CW and the intensity full CCW (as suggested by Sean) but I'm afraid I'll end up with no gain at that point...

Try turning the treble down or off and keep the mids up and you'll have gain.

i have a modded DRRI too and play a telecaster. i really liked the feel/dynamics and sounds of the COT's i've had but always complained about the lack of control over treble. i just returned the new CoT Gold as well. It had a tone knob but i still could not dial the treble out without affecting the overall sound.
if you are looking for a plexi pedal, the Jetter Gain Stage purple is awesome. it sounds and responds almost like a real amp. i've had this pedal for 2 weeks now and it has totally satisfied my marshall cravings with my DRRI. it responds to pick attack very nicely and cleans up better than any pedal that i've tried including the COT and does not impart the bright/harsh treble. it is equally good for crunchy rhythms as it is for singing leads and you can back off the volume on your guitar to get a lighter dirty rhythm sound. it excels as a lead pedal though, and it really cuts through. the marshall overdrive, imo, is probably the perfect overdrive sound. it just cuts and sits really nicely in any mix. the bass is not too flabby and muddy and you can dial in the highs on this pedal.
my favorite rhythm overdrive is still the TIM though. that pedal sounds just like my amp, but dirty :)

I'm actually thinking of getting a TIM over everything. I'd really like a Klon most of all but afraid I can't pay those high prices. Looking for a nice warm but articulate OD. Had it with the COT50 Gold minus the top end...

You might be running your amp too low (gain-wise) to get the most out of you COT. The hotter you run your amp, the better a COT sounds. It has to do with the amount of amp headroom available. If you like to run your amp really clean and use pedals for your dirt, a COT is probably not the best pedal for you, unless you use it only for stacking. For those of us who like to run our amps hot, the COT kicks serious ass without the unwanted high-end. BTW, I run mine through a '65 Super Reverb, so I don't think the amp circuit is the problem.

When using them together, I use the E and CoT the other way...E for rhythm and CoT for lead boost. How are you setting the controls?

The COT 50 is a great pedal but try as I might, I just couldn't get it to work with my rig. I run a BF Super real, real clean and use many different OD pedals for a myriad of overdrive and distortion flavors. The COT stacked great with pretty much all of my pedals but by itself cause a huge volume boost since my amp was set so clean. I held onto it for a long time wanting to make it work but in the end I had to realize that someone else with different rig could get alot more out of it than I would so I let it go to a nice new home that could give it the love it deserved.
Hey Man,
I owned a DRRI, COT God and E all at the same time so I might be able to be of help. IMHO I don't really feel the COT50 Gold is well suited to that amp. My DRRI was heavily modded too (Emi CRex, NOS tubes, bright cap) and I just couldn't dial out the treble either. Do yourself a favor and admit defeat. These days I'm playing a '71 Bandmaster and I've found that for low gain rhythm the Keeley BD2 is as good a match as I'm likely to find. It's not harsh at all, retains ALL of the bass in my signal and it's great. It tedns to stack very well too so might be a perfect match with your E.

On the E it's high volume and gain and low on the treble boost

There are a few good threads on CoT and Eternty stacking. You might want to check them for ideas...
I like to set the CoT at 10:00 or below when used as a lead boost for the E and have the E's controls around 10-11, sometiems Glass at 1:00.
Good luck...wait, are you using carbon batteries? I find them MUCH warmer than alkaline..

I'm using PP2 to power everything. Also, which order do you use the E&COT? I've got the COT before the E....

Just picked up a NOC3 Firefly. Excited to see how it will fare with my setup.... I have far too many OD's! Interesting stuff from NOC3....
