try goosing it if u use more than one OD.
I have a pearl with a TS9 before it and a couple of other units after it.

The tracking is much better that way and if you have an upper octave available, it screams.
Check out this toobage at around 2:32 and 3:30 to see what I mean about goosing the octave. It works equally well with lower octaves.

I put mine right after wah and before any fuzz or od pedals.

Give this a read through. This is my own way of doing things and I found this guy explains things very well:

Your octave pedal will be classified as a pitch effect on his page. I have mine 6th pedal out in the chain, after the wah, compressor and OD's and just before the chorus, flanger and trem.

It might depend on (or it might not, perhaps) which type of octave sound your looking for. I'm into the whole Hendrix/Octavia thing, so I have a Voodoo Lab Proctavia, which I think, for the money, is a fantastic sounding octave-up pedal.
Incidentally, I put it before my fuzz/overdrive/distortion boxes in the signal chain. Sometimes I can use it by itself, but mostly I prefer to run it into my fuzz pedals (Sweet Sound Pro Bender, Throbak Fuzz Haze, and a Throbak Overdrive Boost).

Whoa! I knew this was coming. I just got hit with my first spammy pop-up ad here on TGP. At least it was for something that I already have, so no biggy. I at least understand why they need to do this.
