I just got my guitar by Micheal Tuttle on Friday and all I can say is Holy Crap!

Now for a real review:

I was introduced to Michael through my friend Steve Blucher. Now first off Steve is a very discerning fellow to say the least and really knows what he is talking about. He and I are equally neurotic (well he's is a little worse) so for him to recommend a builder to me he had to be good. I spoke with Michael and hit it off right away, he is a cool straight talking guy. What I liked was how expressed that there was no voodoo in making a good guitar, you just have to know what you are doing. I liked that. He said he could make whatever I wanted but he did have a two tone 1 piece alder body close to being ready so I jumped on it. Maple neck, 9.5 radius, Callaham bridge, 6100 nickel frets, DiMarzio Area pickups.

Obviously the first thing I noticed was the finish and look of the guitar, excellent burst with a thin nitro finish that you can smell (love that). The work is perfect , the neck is .850 at the nut and feels great and like I have been playing the guitar for years, the fretwork is perfect as well. The guitar has a very friendly feel to it.

Acoustically the guitar is very resonant, loud and well balanced. I can feel it vibrate through the strap. Great lows and punchy highs that aren't annoying. Plugged in the guitar sounded just as good, I find myself playing clean all the time because it sounds so good. More cliches, but it is very piano like, true sounding notes with no clutter in the overtones. The guitar really stays together when hit hard, it doesn't compress and reacts to dynamics. Distorted it is articulate and full but not flubby on the neck. As I said I look forward to what the guitar will sound like in a year or two. Twice while playing the guitar I started laughing because it sounded so good, once in front of a student the other while playing it while watching tv with my wife. I said to her "listen to this thing!" she looked an me a shrugged he shoulders... oh well at least she doesn't complain about me playing while watching tv.

I have had and have some pretty nice guitars but this is really in another class on all levels. I know I'm still in the honeymoon phase a little bit but I do know what to look for in guitars and as far as I can tell, this has it. I am exceptionally happy with the guitar and am already plotting on getting a T style from Micheal. His prices are great for the quality you get and the attention to detail and service are top notch. As I said, I already want another. Damn...

I will post some clips as soon as I can.

Dang! You guys are gonna make me custom order one. He's done a number of re-frets for me so I know his fret work. If the rest of the guitar is that good, dang!

Do it now! I am already planning the next one. A Tele or a Junior...

As I said the guitar is fantastic.

Congrats. I have an EJ strat with a superb Michael Tuttle 6100 fret job, oil finish neck, etc.

Isn't the guitar you had built more like a '57? I thought all '54s had ash bodies.

Cheers.

Beautiful guitar Jeff! It looks even better assembled! :D

I was thinking of having Michael make me a Gustavsson Bluesmaster clone. That way, I wouldn't have to pay $10K and wait 3 years for one.

Nice review, Jeff; the Tuttle looks fantastic! Which Area models did you go with?

Yes that would be correct but that's what Micheal calls them, so who am I to argue! I'm glad to hear your EJ came out so well, Michael's work is gantastic. I really can't stop smiling every time I play this guitar.

gtrwrks, I have an Area 58 in the neck, 67 in the middle and a 61 in the bridge. I went with Steve Bluchers suggestions. I was really torn between those and the True Velvets that DiMarzio is now making that sound great. I just love how quiet the Area pickups are and that makes a really big difference on gigs, as I'm sure you know! I really can't go back to pure single coils the noise drives me crazy. I have the Suhr SSC back plate on a few guitars and that works very well, but the Areas are dead quiet.

Cool. Area '67 in the middle? I'm about to install a '58/'58/61 setup in the EJ strat. I suppose the '67 in the middle juices up the quack settings? If Dimarzio tone guru Steve Blucher suggested it, this must be the magic combination!

Yeah, I believe that's why Steve recommended that combo. It works very well, especially because I almost always run my bridge pu with the tone around 5. I set the amp for the neck pickup and roll off the high end on the guitar so I don't remove people's heads.

Hey Jeff...nice review, nice guitar. I have it's cousin. Michael builds great guitars and he's a great guy.

I also have your instructional CD-Rom. It's excellent! Anymore in the works?

Hi Ed. Nice guitar! I have been playing it so much that my fingers hurt, really. I guess that means I don't practice enough...

I am glad you liked my Truefire course. I am working on my next one right now as a matter of fact, and will be filming it next month in FL. I am really psyched about this one, it should be great. I'm not at liberty to tell you exactly what it is about, but I will say it will be something people at the GEAR page will like. ;) Nod, nod, wink, wink... Especially those into CLASSIC GUITARISTS ...wink wink.

The Tuttle will be used, oh yes.

I understand why your fingers hurt. It's one of those guitars you just can't put down.

That's exciting news about another CD-ROM. I'm looking forward to it.
