I'm looking for an interface to get 8 raw drum mics into 8 separate channels on my computer. It is Windows XP Home SP2, FireWire or USB 2, using Adobe Audition. I'm considering the Tascam 2488 which as phantom power but it has many more features than I really need. I just want to get 8 separate audio tracks into my laptop or desktop. My budget is $700 maximum.
What hardware interface would you recommend?

I use a Presonus Firestudio for this. Although others seem to have had problems, mine has been functioning well. Should be able to get for your budget. If not, I believe the Presonus Firestation is well proven and would suit your needs for less cash.

People are mainly having trouble with the FireStudio when using Sonar. Everyone else reports good results. Indeed, these are my findings as well. Mine works perfectly well with Reaper, Cubase 4 LE, and Samplitude 9. Just not with Sonar 6 or 7.
Since I'm a Sonar user, this has proven to be a big issue for me, so I switched to a Motu HD192 and external mic pres.
That means my mint condition FS is for sale...

these come in at under $700 (just), maybe again too many features as its an 8 channel interface and mixer in one.

I really enjoy Presonus's products and service. I have been a Firebox user for a few years now.
I've heard of issues with the FireStudio, mainly w/ a Mac setup...
How about the FP10? It's the new FirePod. Fire Studio is a little different

My Mackie Onyx 400F has been great. I have heard of issues from others, but mine has been rock solid.

I just use a Korg D1600, record 8 channels onto separate tracks, then save out as 8 separate WAVs onto CDRW or CD-R. Import those into your favorite computer program. Problem solved.
D1600's are going cheap these days.

The Alesis Multimix firewire should do the trick. I've used the 8 channel version with Cubase 3 and 4, as well as Acid, SoundForge, GTR3, Guitar Rig and plain 'ol sound recorder. The USB version won't do multiple simultanious inputs like the 1394 versions. They won't break the bank either. Selling the 16 channel version for $399 refurb on the Alesis site.
