View Full Version : Adding "Loop Return" to Amp

I'm rather tempted to pick up one of the new hand-wired Vox heritage amps (head or combo, not sure). Here is my problem. I currently play covers mostly, and I use a Digitech GSP1101 to model preamps, stomps, etc, and I run the output right into the power section (loop return) of my tube amp (Traynor YCV20WR, a 15 watt El84 amp). I'd like to have a good amp for just plugging in when I'm not using my digital processor. The Traynor is just OK when used alone.

So, would it possible/easy for an amp tech to insert a jack that bypasses the pre-amp section of those Vox amps? I don't need an effects send or anything, just an insert point before the power amp (or, more accurately, after the pre-amp I would guess).

I could go with an AC30CC which has an effects loop, but I'm rather partial to the 15 watts. At band volumes, I get my amp and Celestion Blue speaker I have in it going right where I like them. Can I pull tubes on the AC30's to halve the output wattage? I've read that it's possible with some amps.

I'm just into Vox stuff at the moment, so bear with me :).

With a hand-wired amp it should be easy for a tech to install your loop. You cannot however, remove tubes to achieve half power without some mods. The 4 tubes likely share the same cathode resistor and you would have to install two resistors. One for each pair of power tubes. Then a simple switch to lift the cathodes of two tubes and you have half-power.

Thanks for your input. I'll probably go with the AC30CC and look into having it modified for pulling tubes if I find it to be necessary. Looks like the Blue will be out of the question, though. Oh well.
