Here's the deal: what would you use to make a Van Halen guitar rig without using any 5150's, signature effects, guitars, or plexis? Basically I'm looking for creative ideas on guitar setups that can get a great EVH sound but that you wouldn't normally associate with the brown sound. Guitars, effects, amps, speakers, post ideas for the whole setup!

Hmm. new Dunlop eq pedal, a BYOC phaser, an eventide Time Factor, a Variplex and a nice 4-12" with greenbacks. You can't get around the flanger though IMHO- you need the MXR it's the only one that sounds like that that I've tried.

For a guitar geez just get a good strat style w/maple board and a PAF in the bridge (WB, Holmes, Voodoo, or just a good ol Duncan 59).

Here's my Variplex clip, I'm panned hard right so just pan your system right or left to hear Ed or me attempting top replicate Ed exactly:

Lots of tips and ideas for VH tones. Also be sure to check out some of his vid lessons. He is using a solid state Crate btw.

Agreed. However I've always been impressed with the tone he gets from the Crate. I bought one of the same models he uses and was quite surprised at how close I could get to early VH with it.

Who'd of thunk? :jo

The Variplex appears to be the best way. I am going to be ordering mine within the next week.... finally.

Great job with the tone. It also helps that you have Ed's playing down perfectly.

Depends what EVH tone your looking for and are you looking to nail or just ballpark it? In the end for the guys ears that aren't super critical many setups will likely do ballpark if you can play Ed's style. FWIW when you compare even some of the better clips that have been made to the real deal other then Pete's which I consider more or less nailed and a few guys over at metro, most fall short. I myself can get pretty decent EVH sounds from my VHT pitbull and Aiken Intruder amps neither of which were designed to get that tone per say. Ballparking is much easier then Nailing!
